POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
Tin: Otigo Biblc-m-Schools As°ociation me.iui to rome ouco more to tho front. A meeting of the Council took pLioe, when the following, amongst other things, weie agicncl upon, viz — That by public advert'sciucnt ( lectois favorable to the atm of the ;ih-oci ition bt rccjuehtpd to see that their names are placed on the electoial rolls ; a committee was appointed to t-ikc steps to liiivc all candidates for the House of Key i csentativos questioned as to their views on the Bible-in-schools question ; ana tho secretary was instiwted to commuuic.il c with the associations of AuckLiud, Niipier, South Canterbuiy, and Invorcngill ab to taking united action in the matter. We have, rcceued the following communie.ition from Messrs Greshain. lloche, Sibly, T. Walker, and H. Bruce, which we nibcit, but have the best possible reasons for knowing, gives an incorrect veision of what took place : —We, the undci signed, were present at the meeting on Saturday, of which a report appears in to-day's issue of your paper. Wo shall be obliged to you if you •will kindly insert the following account of what actually took place when Mr Wainwright pioposed and Mr Sloanc seconded a vote of confidence in Mr Whitakcr, viz.: Mr Gresham immediately proposed as an amendment, and Mr Johns seconded, ''That this meeting thanks Mr F. A. Whitaker for his statements as to the past, but declines to pledge itself to support him for the future." A division was then taken by the chairman. Seventeen voted for Mr Gresham's amendment, and only seven for Mr Wainwiight's motion ; thus rejecting the proposed vote of confidence by a majority of ten. A Dunedin telegram states : — The Daily Times has authority to state that Mr. Oliver joins the Ministry without port-folio. He will be called to the Upper House, and therefore will not stand for Dunedin central, for which probably Mr E. B. Cargill will bpcome candidate. Wo extract the following from th Auckland ILrahl: — "Blue Nose" writes from Te Awaniutu that Mr. Whitaker received a vote of no-confidence at that place, and that our report stated that he received a vote ©f confidence. " .Blue Nose" is wrong in both his assertions. Our report stated that Mr. Whitaker received a vote of thanks, which was the fact. The N.Z. Twin says : — Parly distinctions at present have no defined linos of demarcation in the colony. Tho public have just witnessed the conclusion of a Parliamentary session wherein there has absolutely been no well-regulated organisation on either side of the House. Ministers commanded a majority strong enough numerically to keep them in office, but by no means strong enough to carry measures which, at the commencement of the session, were clamored for as being of special importance ; but which, being 1 introduced, there was found to be no concord of opinion as to the merits of such proposals." All sorts of reports are current about the date of election day, and a belief, seems to be gaining ground that it is aftj far distant as next January. Happily for society the belief is quite fallacious. W$J "N.Z. Times" are thankful to say/fcbajf the country will not be kept on tho ten/, tor-hooks of expectation all the mojithwrfco January. It would be a very 'serious matter if it were, and would, j^e jfis&r, necessitate the enlargement of /©very lunatic asylum in thecolony. Tbfc ejections, we may cay, will not be/lMfcep .than, the first week of December/ /Extraordinary exertions are being^fifa© fc 0 get the rolls ready and the writs* iAfocti, and we believe the result will bf> time nominations in about six weeks' &n% jsfy polling a week or bo lafcer. / F
