ALEXANDRA NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Native News t Tawbiao at Kawhia. TnEEE has been little ebunge here this last week, trade continuing very dull. A good' number of natives are passing through to Tawhiao's meeting at Hikttrangi, principally from the Thames district. The king at present is at Kawhia, but will return hhortly. A number of his people have already arrived, and are busily ploughing and clearing near the township. A Want. Our settlers are wondering, in face of the small-pox scare, why no public vaccinator is appointed for this district. No medical officer has visited here since the last panic, when the disease obtained a footing in Auckland some years ago. There is no medical practitioner nearer here than Dr. Blilndeu, at Te Awamutu, whose services are only available to those ; who have vehicles of their own, or means to get there, or send for him at their own expense, which few can afford to do. It bcing-ihe eeneral opinion that as it is the law that all should be vaccinated, Government should find the means, Dr. Blunden should be appointed for the duty, and notice given of the date he would visit the township for the purpose. The Late Fatal Accident. A subscription list has been opened here and the neighbouring townships in aid of the unfortunate widow and family of the man MacKeon, who met his death at Kihikihi, which, lam happy to hear, is being well responded to. Major Mair. The motion of Mr Whyte's in the House of Representatives "That the Government will grant some substantial recognition of the valuable sei vices rendered to the colony by Major Mair," is approved by everyone here mlio is acquainted with that gentleman, whatever side their politics incline to. It is to be hoped the members of the House will be as unanimous in their opinion as those who are the most cognizant of the value of what he has done to cement a cordial re-union of the two races. Meantime it is unfortunate that the Major is not more at liberty to give his time to the completion of the good work he has begun, and where so many have failed, his presence where he could at all times be consulted by Tawhiao would be most advantageous. I am informed on good authority that certain disappointed agents are writing and instilling into the native mind the advisability of having nothing to do with the present Government ; that they and their officers will soon be out of office, &c, &c. ; that by waiting those who would take their places would be far more liberal in their dealings with them as of yore. Cricket, &c. A meeting was held at the Alexandra Hotel on Saturday e\ ening for the purpose of forming a cricket club for the ensuing season. Mr J. C. Grierson was appointed captain, and Messi'b Lang, G. Ahier, P. Connell members of committee, Mr A. Ahier secretary and treasurer. The Club are open to accept any challenge from any rival club this side of the line. This decision was ai rived at after due discussion. As hitherto, our club have invoriably had to follow their challenge, which in all cafees has not been returned. There were some hundred natives, at least, here yesterday, speechifying in the township, m tottte for Tawhiao's meeting. Most of them appeared to be in a state of impecmiiosity. and thus took this cheap way of passing their time. The Thames obstructionist, Tukukino, was amongst them. — Sept. 19th.
