THE HAMILTON BOROUGH BOUNDARIES.
' . I. » ' . Although the bill introduced by Mr F. A. Whitak'er for. the purpose of ' defining the boundaries of the Borough, of Hamilton passed through 1 the Souse of Representatives, it was felt that it would meet considerable ' opposition in the Upper Chambei\ The receipt by the Mayor of the following telegram yesterday did not the'reford excite any very considerable suprise : — "Wellington, 16th September. — To John Knox, . Mayor; Hamilton : The Committee of the Upper Hou«e have reported that the boundary goes by the Lake, and 1 excludes Williamsons house. There is nothing I can do, but either agree or throw the bill out if I can by moving the House to disagree with the amendment made in the bill. What do you wish me to do ? Shall I agree, or shall I try to throw out the bill ? Ke2ily urgent. F. A. Whitaker." The Mayor hastily summoned the Council together for the purpose of considering the message, and the unanimous opinion expressed was that no compromise should be made. The following reply was accordingly drafted, and 01 dered to be despatched immediately to the member for the district : — " To F. A. Whitaker, Esq., M.H.R., Wellington. — Council adheres to former resolution. Throw out bill.— Jons Kjxox, Mayor." It will be remembered that the "former resolution" here referred to was to the effect that the Borough boundaries should be the same as those always understood to be those of the old town district. It is just possible that the bill will be passed despite all that Mr Whitaker may do, although there is little doubt that he will do his utmost to carry out the wishes of the Council.
