Mr Whyte gave notice that he would ask whether Government' does'not intend to recognise in spme substantial manner the very great services rendered to the | colony by Major Mair in bringing about the much t more cordial relations now existing between the Kingite natives and the Europeans? Questions. Replying to questions put, it was stated that if the Government could provide for the Auckland University College it would be as much as they could undertake this year, without attempting to make a similar proposition for Wellington,— lt would he quite impossible dunng the present session to bring down the bill to permit Jocal bodies to use for rating purposes the valuation under the Property Assessment Act with the usual corrections. The Speaker anjl the Chairman of Committee's! Mr Hull drew attention to an article in the Auckland Herald^ reflecting upon the action of the Speaker and the Chairman of Corarnittoes. He wished to state that the insinuations and assertions contained in that article were entirely false. The Speaker and Mr Seymour followed, denying the truth of the statement-*. They said they did not intend to take any action in ,the matter, but would live duwn the calumny. Steam Service to England. On the motion for the consideration of the Committee's report, Mr Macandrew said the cost would very probably not exceed £60,000, including pobtal receipts. He thought no time should be lost, as it would at least take two years to establish the line. He moved that the House go into (Jommifctee to consider the report Mr John&on thought the proposal premature, as the present service contract did not expire till near the 1 end «f 1883. The Government was making the fullest enquiries, and hoped next session to lay all the necessary information before the House. The motion was carried by 49 to 11. In committee, Mr Macandrew moved, as the first of a "cries of resolutions, " That this Committee is of opiuion that the establishment of a direct monthly t-er-vice vyitb, Europe would very materially promote the interests and development of the resources of this colony. " Mr Wood moved as an amendment, "That they had not sufficient information befote them to deal with the subject, but that the Government should prosecute further inquiries as to the torms ou which directcommnnication could be established, and report the result to the next Parliament. " The motion was lo<?t by '31 to 27, and the amendment was carried. Retrenchment. On the motion forgoing into Committee of Supply. Mr Bryce moved "That the House affirm the desii ability of reducing the estimates by £30,000. Major Atkinson said the Government would accept the motion in the spirit in which it was offered, ' arid would do its best to give effect to it. ' The motion-was then put and carried.
