A letter had been received" from tbe -JBo.trd of Education giving riotinp that 'dn account of the pmall attundance of children the school would hnve'to'tJft mude a half Time' school from the 31>t of August: ' The' Committee therefore decided to brinjr m force the compulsory clause of the Education Act, as there are several childien in the diatrict that are not; sent to echool. They also decided to try and raise a fund hy subscription to give prizes to the most proficient scholars iv the different branches of 'learning and punctuality, etc., an examination to be held at Christmas, and the prize* then given. Two attempts have been made to plant the school ground with trees, and the majority of the trees have in both caies died. Another trial is to be made and the trees procured from the nurseryman direct, as those sold at the auction trae sales are frequently many weeks out of the ground, as if not sold at one place they aro sent on to the next, and so on till they are sold, after visiting all the townships. A very serious assault took place here on Saturday, the 27th of August, a German settler named Pohlen, who has lived her from the first settlement of the place, has for a long while, some years in fact, had a dispute with Mr McMinn [ about some public land and roadways that the latter has fenced in and Pohleu would persist in going through the land, and this is not the first assault case over the matter. Pohlen not being allowed to pass attacked Mr McMinn with a fernhoolc and wounded him in the arm, not very seriously. The case was decided by the R.M., Alexandra, on Friday last, and 1 you will have g-ot the result. His two little children are being taken care of by one of the neighbors, as Pohlen is a widower. Last week we had some very rough squally weather here, but on the w hole we have had a very favorable winter for stock and the feed is improving. — [Qvfn Correspondent, September 6th.
