THE LOBBIES. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH, SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
_ , The Cambridge, Railway. WtbLmul nN) Last Night. A BirA, empowering tlu Government to proceed with the constni ;tion of certain railways was intuduoed by the Premier on Thursday. It authorises the Hamilton-Cambridge line .is provided, for in the Public Works Estimates. There is some threat of oppositi >n, but in the present excited state of ijeling I am not disposed to believe it bus any very fixed purpose. One or two names have been associated with obstruction, Speight and Jones among the number. It arises more out of a disposition to obstruct Government business than to defeat the work. The Government will of course stand by it, and with the majority they have got its ultimate passage may be regarded as secure. The Hamilton Bridge Petition. Messrs Ayhyte and Whitaker attended the Public Petitions Committee in support of the Hamilton bridge petition. The facts of the case were fully gone into, the grounds of the claim made on behalf of the petitioners being fully represented in the evidence of the members. Nothing has yet transpired as to the provable recommendation of the Committee. Analysis of Soils. The question of analysing soils and manures has been further discussed. Yesterday Mr Murray had a question on the Order Paper relative thereto. The Colonial Secretary stated in reply that district postmasters were authorised to frank samples forwarded to Mr Skey, Wellington, for analysis, that being, he thought, the most complete provision that could be made under existing circumstances.
