THE PROPOSED VOLUNTEER AND PUBLIC HALL HAMILTON.
The circumstances surrounding the project for erecting a Public and Volunteer Hall in Hamilton West are fresh in the minds of our readers. It will be remembered that the Vestry of S. Peters had a sum of £150 in hand which it was intended should be devoted to the erection of a Sunday- Bchool if the steps necessary for the erection of a public hall were not taken by a certain specified date. An extension of time was subsequently granted, and the Public Hall Site Trustees having in the meantime secured through the member for Waipa a renewal of the grant of £100 for a Volunteer Hall, set to work and accepted a tender for the erection of the building. The scheme was viewed with disfavor by the residents of East Hamilton. They argued that Hamilton was already provided with halls which did not pay, and that any further expenditure would be thrown away. To give practical exexpression to this objection a petition was drawn up, and numerously signed, praying that the vote of £100 be diverted in aid of a public library for Hamilton, and this was in due course forwarded to the Government. On Monday last Mr R. Harris one of the petitioners received a letter which will be found in our correspondence column. Hi 9 "Worship the Mayor, who is also Chairman, of the Site Trustees, hearing of this took prompt action and wired to the member for Waipa (Mr If. A. Wbitaker) from whom he received a telegram, yesterday, to the effect that he had jmst seen the Defence Minister, who told him that the sum of £160 had been placed on the estimates for a Volunteer Hall. It would 1 appear, therefore, that some misconception must have arisen, the vote of £100' being 1 not for a public hall which was referred to in the petition, but a Volunteer Hall, which is a very different affair.
