TE AWAMUTU NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
We are enjoying the most delightful spring weather in this neighbourhood, and the farmers are actively getting in their spring crops. A good deal of the wheat already sown is showing vigourously, the demand for the fine potato crop of last season is stdl active at a good price, the lambing is proceeding favourably, and everything seema to combine to induce the out- settlers to look forward to a prosperous season, and to take a more hopeful view of the prospects of the Waipa accordingly. Such a feeling causes more money to be spent and more labour to be employed, and makes the townships in the locality feel in better heart. Such is the state of things in Te Awamutu certainly, In the meantime, however Te Awamutu may grow, we can only afford to busy ourselves with the evil of the day, as tomorrow, or soon after, we have every reason to suppose we shall die. One of these pieces of local business of interest is that the Rangiohia Highway District Bush Reserves, consisting principally of 50 acres near Kihikihi and 80 acies near Te Awamutu, have been gazetted as vested under the Public Domains Act in the Piuiiu Domain Board, the meeting day of w hich is to be the first Saturday in each month. The affairs which this Loard will manage have been previously under the Road Board. Talking of Road Boards it is pleasing to notice that sundry holes in the road to Xii.ikihi that caused Borne interruption to the traffic during the late rains have been carefully repaired with ti-tree fascines and the road made equal to the rest of the unusually pond public ways of the district. Hououi to tfiom honour is due. It may not be geueially known to the world on t'other side of Jordan that we in Te Awamutu a few months ago made n very creditable attempt to start a public libraiy. By public subscription aided by a grant by the Board of Education » pleasing 1 , well selected bcgitning 1 of over 300 volumes was .started, a room ■was kindly provided by Mr Liiidlaw of the place, and for a small subscription supposed decent readers were allowed the inestimable privilege in a dull country town jf luivimr the use of such woiks> as those of .Scott, Dickens, Ivingtsley, Macaulay, Shakespeare, and other well-known writers. It would naturally be supposed that such a boon would have been highly prized and taken e\ery care of, but on the conticiry with the Übual pleasing manner of colonial Luiikins, many or most of the readcis kept the books enti listed to them, and by Home mismanagement were aliowrd to do so o\ er and o\ er again till the library has been plundered oi over 150 volumes. If it were possible to publish the names of those who have acted so shabbily and stupidly, I for one would willingly do so, but as it appears impossible tlnough mismanagement of somebody, I can only hope that such .gentlemen as do not intend to commit rery petty sinned larceny, and have only through caielessnes 1 ? kept the books, will return at least &ome of the 150 missing volumes. If a man means to go in for thieving, let him make a more spirited beginning than that at any rate. The Te Awamutu Troop (A) of the "Waik.ito Cavalry met on Saturday for their first day's firing for the belt The firing party was m chaige of Lieut. Bruce. The hung was fair, the highest score being that ot 56, by Sub-Lieut. Wilkinson. On the first Saturday of next month, they will fire again for prizes. — [August 22nd.]
