The Land Question. Lytteltox, Last Night. ' At a meeting last 1 evening' for the purpose of forming a society to promote the.natioualisation of land in New Zealand, in accordance with the principles contained in a pamphlet called "Land ho '." a resolution, was passed in favor of forming a society, entitled " The Land Ho. Association N0.,1." The movement is meeting with cpnsiderable support here. It is intended to take steps to form branches throughout the colony. The* basis of the proposal is the repurchase by the State of all the freehold properties, and the substitution of a system of ' lease with a provision enabling the State to resume possession of any "block of land above 2000 acres ou payment of a fair compensation.
Two 3£en Drowned. Whangakei, Last Night. A dreadful accident occurred here, by which two men were drowned. Five started in a punt for the railway works, Limeburuer's Creek, named John Hamilton, John Campbell, Lewis Saft, David Ramsay, and John Fallays, well-known in Auckland as "Jersey Jack." The punt was swamped, and the two latter were drowned. Hamilton was nearly gone, but was rescued by , Campbell at the, risk of his own life. The men were cared for by natives, and information was brought here. Ramsay could not Bwini, but "Jersey Jack" was a good swimmer, but their mates did not hear than make any etfort to save life.
