PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
Thk annual monthly meeting of the . above Council took place at 2 o'clock in the offices of the Cambridge Town Board on Saturday last. Thore were present, MrR. H. D. Fergusson (ohaiinian), Crs. Ellis, Chepmell, and Campbell. The minutes of the previous meeting wero read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Te Aroha Riding. In reference to the resolution passed at the April meeting of the Council constituting the outlying district of Te Aroha a riding, the following proposition was put forward by Cr. Ellis, and on being seconded by Cr. Chepmell was carried, " That the resolution passed on the 6th of April, constituting Te Aroha outlying district a riding, be confirmed." It was then proposed by Mr Chepmell, and seconded by Mr Campbell, " That the Chairman be authorised to appoint a valueiCfor the riding." — Carded. The Clerk's Appointment. On the motion of Mr Chepmell, seconded by Mr Campbell, it was resolved "Thafc Mr Tuck'fi appointment to the clerkship of the Council be confirmed ; «arne appointment to date from 12th of May."— Carried. Eegistration of Dogs. With regard to this matter, Cr. Chepmell proposed and Or. Ellis seconded "That the Chairman be empowered to take such Btftps aB ho tnay consider necessary to enf orce the registration of dogg in the County."— Carried. Te Aroha Boads. A letter was received r ffom Mr Adam Sorter, Te'Aroha, asiriii£'tt»e Council to
pay half the amount inourred by the shareholders in twO olaims iv making tracks to the same. The Council decided that as the work was undertaken without consulting them as to whether the work was advisable, 01 whether they would contribute towaids the necessary expenditure, they would decline to pay anything towards this object. A letter re the estimates for construction of certain works on the Te Aroha having 1 been received from Mr Purchas, Cr. Ohepmell was authorised to see that gentleman with reference to hit) letter, and to call for tenders for the works considered necpssary by him. Tho Clerk was instructed to writo to the Colonial Secretary, informing him that the Te Aroha district had been constituted a riding, and asking him to return one member, increasing; the number of (Jounoillors to nine — the full compliment. The Clerk was also instructed to retain copies of the Wuxkato Times containing tho notices relative to the resolution about Te Aroha Hiding. The Chairman was requested to cause a seal to be made. The Clerk reported that the vouchers forwarded to the Warden at Te Aroha had not yet been returned.
Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment :— John Hunt, £10 10s ; Te A) oka Minir, £2 2s; James Bond, 17s> 6d : Thomas Wells, Is 6d ; E. M. Edgcunibe & Co., £1 10s. The Clerk informed the Council that theic was a balance at the bank of £108 11s Id ; cash in hand, £2 9s lid. Government Subsidy. The Government have given a subsidy of £116 Ms lid (exactly half of the expenditure), towards the construction and repair of roads m the vicinity of Te Aroha. An Exorbitant Account. The Clerk (Mr Tuck) read the following private letter fiom the Waikato agent of the Auckland JicraUl :—: — Hamilton, August id, ISBI . If jou will kindl) forward me the Council's cheque for the account with the account itself, I will transmit to }ou the usual auctioneers' commission of 20 per cent on receipt, and the receipted account for the Council.—l am, etc., Fri dk J Yon Siurmir, Waikato Agent N Z lfnald This account, it was stated, was passed foi payment at the last meeting of the Council, the sum being £5. The Council expressed preat surprise at the manner in which they had been treated m this respect. Ihey wondered how Mc&ais Wilson and Horton could affcud to give a thud party 20 per cent on such a small account, and then allow their Waikato agent perhaps another 20 per cent., which would reduce the price of the book to £3, and were thankful to the clerk for exposing the matter. Thib being all the business, the Council rose.
