CAMBRIDGE HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
The annual meeting of the ratepayers of this district was held on Wednesday last at Camp's Hotel, Hautapu. About fourteen ratepayers were piesent, and the chair was occupied by Mr J. H. Smith. The Secretary read the following Statfment of Accounts tor thk year ending 3oth Junk, 1881 : - Receipts : Contractor's deposits, Ll4 ; special grant for roads, L 20 0; Government subsidy, L 173 is4d; contributions to works, L 5 ; County subsidy, L5O : contributions to cost of road stopped, L 2 16s; rates collected, L 348 16s gd. Total, L 703 14s id. Expenditure . 1880, June 30, balance Dr from last >e.ir, Lit 4 us 3d ; advertising and printing, L 3 4; budges and culvert!., L3O 8s id; conti actor's deposits, Lio; engineering and_ sur\ejing, L 53 6s 6d ; miscellaneous expenditure, Lll qs sd; commission on rates collected, L2l is 6d ; roads, L 434 4s sd ; books and stationery, Li 3s 7d; salanes, L2O; bank interest on O D , L} 2s id ; valuation of district, L 7; public pound erection, Ll6 4s gd ; balance cash in bank, L 33 2s 6d, less unpresented cheque (small), L 5. Total, L 793 14s id. The following ratepayers were nominated for the office of Trustees : — Mebsra. S. S. Graham, Snowden, Fantham, J. J. Smith, W. Selby, A. W. Pearson, John Brown, and B. B. Booth. A poll resulted in the election of the first five :— Messrs Halley and Pearson were appointed auditors and Messrs Booth and John Martyn junr. fence- viewers. Board Meeting. A meeting of the new Board was held immediately after the above. Present : Messrs Graham, Fantham, J. J. Smith, Snowden, and Selby, Mr Graham was elected chairman and treasurer ; Captain McPhersoD secretary ; and Mr Fitzgerald collector and valuer. The following accounts were passed : — Whitaker and Sheehan, £4 2s Sd ; G. T. Norris, £34 14s 6d; T. Wattatn,£l6 10s ; Ferguson and Crickett, £1 ; P. LeQuesne, £1 14s; W. Smith, £1 10s; S. C. McCallam, £12 12b 6d ; ditto, £3 ; Chas. Crouch, £21 ; Hannon and Teal, £12 6s. Accounts rendered by Messrs Hannon and Wells were ordered to be returned for explanation. Mr Hosking's account, £7 10s, was ordered to be paid on receipt of plans and specifications charged for. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary advising the Board to proceed in accordance with seotion 200 of the Counties Act in the establishing of the new pound at Hautapu. Messrs Smith and Fantham were deputed to arrange with Mr R. Hayton about some damage said to be done to his property by the caving-in of the gravel pit at Gerrans' corner. It was resolved to ascertain the terms on which the banking business of the Board could be done by application to both banks in Cambridge. The secretary was instructed to advertise for a ranger. The secretary was also instruoted to write to Mr Ewen, requesting him to commence work at the hill contract forthwith. The Board then rose.
