ARRANGEMENTS IN HAMILTON.
A. meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor presiding, to take measures for the reception of Tawhiao on his arrival in Hamilton. The Town Clerk having laid on the table correspondence relative to the visit, Cr. Hill moved and Or. Peat seconded, '•That the Mayor and Councillors meet Tawhiao and welcome him to the borough." This was supported by ,Cr. Vialou, who considered that the expense should be borne by the borough, but recommending that this should be left for the public' meeting tfo decide. river be requested to give a holiday on that day to enable the children to be present to assist on the occasion, of which due notice will bo given. Tina was all the business.
Public Meeting. A public meeting of the burgesses was held immediately after the above, the Mayor in the chair. After some remarks from the chair, relative to the importance of the occasion, Mr S.mdes moved "Thattho Mayor and Council, accompanied by the Hamilton Bras* Band, meet Tawhiao at the Borough boundary ; that the Borough Council provide the funds necessary to entertPin Tawhiao duiing 1 his stay in Hamikont and that the townspeople and settler^ be invited to assist in rendering the reception as successful us possible. He impressed upou those present the necessity for assisting liberally in money or in kind towards entertaining Tawhiao's followers. This was seconded by Mr Vialou, and carried. Mr G wynne moved that the Mayor request the burgehses to observe the day of T.iwhiao's arrival as a public holiday This was seconded by Mr Sandes, and carried. Mr K. Hill moved that a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Captain Steele, Messrs Vialou, Sandes Gwynne, dimming, Gaudin, Gelling, and the mover, be appointed to carry out the arrangements. At the suggestion of the Rev. C. Griftin, it was agreed that subscription lists be opened, and placed in the banks and stores, and a list was at once laid upon the table, to which a number of names were attached before the meeting separated.
