The Late Intercolonial Conference. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Last Night.
TiihßE were five despatches received from the Secretary of State to the Governor of New Zealand on the subject of the Intercolonial Conference, held at Sydney, laid on the table of the House of Representatives this day, They all bear the date oi the U v th or 12th of May last. In the first despatch Lord Kimberley says that he has perused a report of the proceedings of the Conference with much interest, some of the questions requiring separate and special notice, which wifl be dealt with in separate despatches. His Lordship says : — " I am well aware of the strong objections which are entertained generally in the Australian Colonies to an extensive Chinese immigration, but evidence of injury already sustained, or likely to be sustained by the neighbouring colonies, would be necessary to justify Her Majesty's Government in interfering with the arrangements sanctioned by the Legislature (two thitds of which is elective)." On the subject of naval and military defence, the Secretaiy of State remarks. — "Her Majesty's Government have noticed with much satisfaction that pai t of the resolution which pledges the membcis of the Conference to use fill legitimate endeavors to procure the efficient fortification and land defence of the Australian ports at the cost of the colonies interested. "
