PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of tho above body took place on Saturday last the 2nd inst. at the Chambers of the Cambridge Town Board wheu there were present — Urs. R. H. 1). Fergusson, (chairman}), J. 1\ Campbell, Chapmell, and Ellis. The minutes of the previous meeting being read and coufirmed, <md the outward correspondence being re id and disposed of, the clerk read the communications which passed between Crs. Williams and Campbell and the under Secretary for mine*, Mr Oliver Wakpfield relative to the roadn in the vicinity of To Aroha. The following ia a copy of the correspondence (telegraphic and'postal) referred to above. The Hon. Mr Rolfcston. Subsidy from rate for roads at goidfields urgently needed at Te Aroli.i. Hatterj fintsliLd and cannot be kept going unless roads are made up to claims proved auriferous. County Council willing to spend if Go\ernment will subsidise same, , Present population will be kdpt on field, if those tracks are nude, through the winter. In reply to the above the following was received from Mr Wakefield :—: — To Councillors Williams and Campbell. In reply to telegram jesterday. I am instructed to inform you that a subsidy of half four hundred pounds (,£400) agreed to be expended by Piako County Council upon goldfield roads, Aioha, will be' granted upon conditions prescribed in letter, which will be posted to-morrow. — (Signed) Ouvlr WamiFilld, Undcr-.Secretary Goldfields.
Mines Department, Wellington, 20th May, 1881. Sir, — With reference to the telegram of the 10th inst. from Councillors Williams a&d Campbell to the Minister of Mines, and to my telegraphic reply of yesterd.iy upon the subject of a subsidy towards the construction of roads or tracks to auriferous claims upon Te Aroha Goldfiqld, ,X am directed, by Mr Rolleston, to inform you that a. subsidy of two hundred pound* (£200), half the amount proposed to, be expended! by the Council, will tie granted-to-wards these works upon the conditions that » the contracts are let by, publip tender, and progress p_a> ments of one half the amount expended from time to time will be made upon the certificates of the Mining Inspector (Mr McLaren) and the County Engineer that the money! has been expended, and work to the value stated has been satisfactorily performed when applications for the subsidy are made. The , Warden should be consulted as to the proposed works, and the certificates referred to above should be accompanied by a voucher for the amount of subsidy applied for.— l ha,ye, &c, Oliver \Vakeheld. v , Balance at Bank. In reply to Cr. Fergua^on, the Clerk stated that the Council had a balance in their favour at the bank of £31 12s Bd.
