KIHIKIHI SCHOOL MATTERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In reference to a lotfal in shape of a minute, that was passed by the Kihikihi School District Committee, at a meeting held by that body on Monday evening last, and forwarded by C. J. Thomas, clerk to the committee, / and which appeared in your issue of the 23rd inst. permit me to say, that as chairman of that committee, I knew nothing whatever of any meeting being held, or even of the intention of the committee to hold a meeting on last Monday evening. It is true, indeed, that a meeting might have been held in the Kihikihi Hotel upon the Monday evening referred to, but not in the school-house. Meetings of this illegal description are said to take place in the above pub, two or three times weekly, some say nightly, bub these secret and illegal meetings, I make it a rule never to attend. — I am, &c. Forbes Gobdon. Chairman Kihikihi School Committee.
We extract the following from a home paper :— -" A cricket matoh was played at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, on Easter Monday, between Thornbury and a minor Bristol club which was remarkable for the scoring 1 of three raember3 of the home team, K. M. Graced W. G. Grace, and J. Cranston. One of the visitor^ H. G. Hall, has occasionally played for Somersetshire, but the James Thorne club, is by no mean& a leading looal club, and its temerity in playing Thornbury is remarkable. The Thornbury ground is famous for run-getting ; it is very small, and boundary hits are easy, whilst the ground on Monday was very lively, the result being that the Graces ana- Cranston scored at a great rate. The James Thorne club were all disposed of for a total of 42 Thornbury team scored 674 for the loss of three wickets. The three highest scores were E. M. Grace 228, W. Or." Grace (not out) 196, and J. Cranston ,(not out) 174." The new pure cash system now being initiated by G. and >C. will cerfajnly prove a benefit "to the public. It has been a great success in Sydney and Melbourne, and ' when strictly carried out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to enitire a rapid sale must be a groat gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery millinary, and clothing at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a shareholder of a co-operative society, without the risk of being called upon to bear a portion of the loss should the year's business prove unsatisfactory. Garlick and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the public have hitherto shown them, and are determined to give the pure cash system a fair trial ; whether they gain or lose the first year. Country buyers on remitting cash with order will be supplied with goods at co-operative prices ; iust the same as though they made a personal selection. Furnishing goods, such as carpetSj floor cloths, bedsteads, bedding, and general house furniture, the largest portion of which 4 is turned out at our own factory, will be marked at the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of five per cent, will be allowed to those who pay at the time of purchase. G. 8c C. having realised the entire value of their stock during their late cash sale, the present stock is new and cheaply bought. An inspection is invited. — Garlick and Cranwell, City Hall Furnishing Arcade Queenitreet, Auckland
