Notices. Mr Fulton gave notice to ast If Government intended to bring down a measure for moro effective suppiession of wife desertion, thereby preventing women ho deserted becoming chargeablo to the colony.

Local Government. Sir Georce Grey gave notice that he would, on the 30th nut., bring down a local self-government measure.

Questions. Replying to a question put, it was stated that Government had under consideration the propriety of introducing this session an amended qualification of the Selectors Act, 1879, in the direction of giving votes to leaseholders and ratepayers. The Act gave full power to open land in Canterbury on lands now held under pastoral lease in May 1882 for pastoral and deferred payment purposes. Plans and reports on these lands were in cour-e of being prepared, and when these were completed fuller explanations as to the intentions of Government would be given. The Government did not intend introducing a Land Hale Bill this session, Some such measure would probably be brought in next ses-sion.

New BillsThe following new bills were introduced nnd read first time: — A Bill to Make Provision for Regulating and Conducting Election of Members of the House of ReprcbontatiNes : Conupt Pi-tict'ce Prevention (Mr Johnston) : Masteiton ami G-ieytown Lands Management Act 1871 Amendment (Mi- Dick).

Licensing Bill. The Licensing Bill was further considered m committee. licensing lees be made colonial instead 01 local revenue was lost on a division of 5 to 5-4. A motion by Mr Murray, "That packot licenses be treated as the colonial levenue, and not revenue of the locality in which the license was issued, was also lost. Clause 12G was, pn the motion of Sir W. Fox, altered to read: — "No woman other than the licensee shall be employed in the bar of a licensed house more than eight hours a clay ;" and, on the motion of Mr Bowen, it was agreed th.it no female, except as aforesaid, shall, with 01 without her consent, be employed in the bar after 10 p.m. On clause VII), Sir W. Yo\ moved— "That tea, codec, etc., should be supplied at all tunes at the bars ot licensed houses. " Interutpted by 5.30 adjournment.
