HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday night. Present, His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Vialou, Peat, Lovett, Tippen, Jones, R F. ftandes, and McGairigle. — The minutes of previous meetings weie read and connuned,j[and the outward correspondence was read and appioved. — A telegram was read fiom Mr Whitaker, M.H.Jt , intimating that he was using every endeavour in the matfer of the Borough Award of £110. — A letter was read from Mr George Kelly, asking the Council to lay a culveit near his house in Cook-street. -Resolved that the Borough workman be in&tj ucted to do the necessary work under the supervision of Cr. Tippen. — The Town Clerk reported that he had held a sale of Borough stores on Saturday; total value £3 18s. — The Town Clerk repoitcd that he had been unable to collect slaughteimg fees from Messis Hill and C. Potter. Borough Banking Account, The Agent for the Union Bank wrote, stating that the peuod for which terms weic made w the IJorough overdraft had elapsed, and requesting the Council to make some fresh airangements. — In answer to questions, the Mayor said the auangenr, with the bank had been made by the late Mayor, outside of the committee appointed for that purpose. He understood that the terms ol that arrangement Mere that the overdraft would have to bo altogether reduced withm the period named. — Seveial councilors expiessed surprise that such an auangement should have been made. — Cr. Peat &aid he had understood that the Council was to pay off the overdraft as soon as possible, but not withm any specified peiiod. — Ci Sandes was under the impression that all the bank wanted was a fresh Jinangement. It was absurd to expect that the Council could pay off the overdraft in one year ; it would take the whole of the rates. — A committee consisting of lii& Worship the Mayor, Ci&. Vialou and Sandes, was appointed to wait on the managers of tho Bank of New Zealand and the Union Bank to obtain their teims re the bank overdiaft.
Other Business.. Mr ft. Davis wrote, asking permission to fence across Palmerston-street from block 281 to Mr Vialou's paddock. The application was granted on condition that a gateway should be erected. — Mr F. (xautlm wrote on behalf of S. Peter's Vestry, suggesting that if the church lamp in Victoria-street were lighted every night it would be a groat pubhp convenience, and offering the use of the lamp for the purpose, — The Mayor thought if they granted such an application in one ease they would have to grant others of a similar nature. — Cr. Sandes explained that tile Vestry wished to hand the lamp over to the Borough on condition it would be lighted every Sunday night. — The letter was received.— Messrs 0. R. Johnson and John Bidler wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the bad state of the Ohaupo road near Coxa gate. A few loads of gravel a\ as all that was iiG&esi»ftry — On the motion of Cr. The application was gi anted. — The Mayor leported that the meeting of the comHtlsglonpys of the Bridge Loan Sinking Pui)d Jiad been dpforrod for the present. — 111 accordance with nolicp, the Council agreed to strike a rate of Is in the £ on the rateable value of all property within the Borough for the ensuing year.— The statement of accounts for the month was read as follows : —General account overdraft, £474 13s 8d ; special fund acpqunfc, credit, £74 9s 3d.— The Mayor, in accordance with notice, moved that the name of Mr If. R. Oqx be substituted for that of Dr. Beale as a Commissioner for the Bridge Loan Sinking Fund.— After some little disousßion the motion was carried. — In accordance with notice, the Mayor moved that By-IaAV ISlo, 4, that which has reference to cattle and hordes straying within 40 chains of the PostofHoos on either nU]& the river, be suspended for tho present. Ho spoko of the hardship which people were suffering, especially on the East side of the river. — This was seconded by Cr. Tippen, who gave it as his opinion that the large number of by-lowswas driving people out of the plaoe.-^Cp.
