WHATA WHATA-HAMILTON RO AD.

Os Wednesday, the Mayor of Hamilton drove the first buggy over the new line of road from Hamilton to Whatawhata. There were three other gentlemen with him, and although parts of the, road are somewhat rough, the contracts not yet being completed, it will soon be very niucli better than the old track for driving over. The worst part of the road is encountered soon after passing through Jolly's gate. Mr Booth, the contractor for this section, has not done much work on it yet, as lie has been assisting to push forward the ballasting of the swamp on the next section during the fine weather ; however, with the exception of one culvert not in place, the line of road is open, and with a slight deviation at this point offers no serious obstacle to wheeled traffic, and for horsemen may be considered an excellent "route. The heaviest part of the work is in Mr Livingstone's contract £ -th'e middle section. This is principally through swamp, but the ballasting is nearly finished, and it will now require only a little trimming to be ready for the inspection of Mr Breakell, the Engineer. Mr Shepherd's section joins Mr Livingstone's at McCutcheon's Hill, and thence into the township: The works on this part of the road are light, a few small cuttings and with a little filling here and there -to the crest of the hill, and from McCutcheon's to the township the road only requires to be formed. The party made the return journey from Kellow's to James' in an ' hour and twenty minutes.
