CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD

A meltixc of the above Board was held at their Chambers, Cambridge, ou Tuesday afternoon last when there were present, Messrs. J. P. Campbell /in the chair), Kirkwood, Thompson, and Johnson. There beinpr no objections by the i«,tepaycis to the Boaid making tho lato »t a shilling in the £, us notifle.l by .idveitispment, the late was confirmed, and the oidinary business of the Boaid w.is then procei ded with. The minutes of the last monthly meeting 1 weie lead and confirmed.

The Road between the Bridges. Mr Kirkwood drew the attention <jf the Board to the piece of ro.id Mtuated between the bridges over the liveis a, little outside the tuwn, rcmaiking tli.it it was urgently necebiaiy that the budge fit sr crossed aftei leaving the town fahould be rai&ed about 14 feet above its pie.sent level, and that it was neee&ssiry borne fencing .should be done near the othei bridge over the Waikato. This latter he would diaw special attention to, when it was consideied that a serious calamity was at any time likely to eventuate m the dark at this place, there being nothing whatever to prevent a pel son from lichng or driving down mto one of the deepest parts of the Waikato without the slightest possibility of getting out again. The raiding of the bridge would cost £150, and the other repairs comparatively nothing. He was aware that it had already been agieed to between the various Boards interested that the work should be proceeded with immediately, and that the cost should be borne proportionately between the thiee, viz. : four-ninths by the Cambridge Town Board, three-ninths by the Cambridge Highway Board, and two-ninths by the Taotaoroa Board. Ho likewise thought that if the Pukekura Board were approached in a proper manner they would contribute something towards the expense of the contemplated improvement. Mr Campbell having coincided with the remarks of Mr Kirkwood, it was determined that the Pukekura Board be communicated with relative to the expense of repairs and maintenance of the road and bridge under consideiation. It was also resolved that the engineer be requested to prepare the necessary plans and specifications for the work, the same to be laid before the Board at its next monthly meeting- along Avith the estimates of the probable cost, and also that he be instructed to apply to Mr Kirkwood and Mr Wells as to the best way to proceed in the matter, the style of work, etc.

The Town Districts Bill. Mr Campbell speaking with legard to this bill said it was desirable that a public meeting should be called for the purpose of passing a resolution in favor of the adoption of the Town Districts Bill, and that a petition be set on foot to be introduced into the House by the .member for the district, urging the necessity of the bill being made law. The bill if passed, would invest them with considerable powers which they now stood co urgently in need of : The Water Supply scheme he would instance. This matter had, up to the present, being nothing but a matter of talk, they having no power ■whatever tv proceed in the matter ; wberea* if the bill in question were passed, they would be* able to proceed at once, irrespeofiire of external influences, being indead invested with the powers of the Municipal Corporations. Mr Kirkwood, speaking with reference to what Mr # Campbell had said te the „ water supply! said if something decisive ,were not done on this matter, a calamity such as that experienced by the people of Tautanga lately would be the inevitable reward of their negligence. It was oTfvioilsly necessary that they should be provided with some means of averting a like calamity, and that the Board should , JjQiiuvtistediWith the necessary powers to ' provide 'such. It w.vn urgent that they shoultj fcyet't th^m^lves to have the Town 1 B'KtviciM Bill ' passed thiough ' Parliament tlnnug the coining Bes^on ;

this bill giving the necessary powers to the Board, with which Municipal Corporations were invested.

Public Meeting. It was then resolved that a public meeting of ratepayers should be called for Thursday, the 16th inst., to consider the advisibility of petitioning Parliament to pass the Town Districts Bill, and also to take some stops in regard to the proposed Cambridge railway, as well as the water supply scheme and other matters of importance to the district.

The Road Through Hally's Property. The Chairmau, in drawing the Board's attention to this matter, &aid it was a matter which had been in question for the last eight or ten years, and now, as Mr Hally had made a very reasonablcoffer, and one whicli was likely to meet with their approval there was every possibility of its bein< beneficially settled. It was impossible for them to make a road through the gully, which was its legitimate courhe, and to bridge it would be out of the quo->tiou completely, and considering this Mr Ilally and Mr McNeish had kindly consented to give them 26 foot (breadth) of a road through their propeifcy on consideration th.it they (Hally and McNei^M should have a lease for 21 years of the defaulting 1 acre, adjoining which was the property of the Boaxd. This he thought was a very favorable offer, and one which he was certain they would accept, the ratepayers being the principal gainers in the transaction. It was resolved that the matter be brought forward at the public meeting of ratepayers to bo held on Thuisday night, for their consideration.

Accounts. The following iicxounts weie passed for payment: — Mr Honking, CE,, £15 17s 9d, Movers Ptrgus^ou and Cricketfc, £102 Ws, Mr Edgar Ward, £1 Si.

Annual Meeting. Ifc was determined that the annual meeting should bo held on Wednesday, the 13th July. The Board then rose.
