(TuESDAT.-T-Before H. W. Norfchcroft, Esq., R.M., (chairman), fc>. S. Graham and W. P. Chepmell, Esys., J.P., Commissioners).' 1
New Licenses, Mr. Hay applied on behalf of Mr A. 0. Field, for a license for the Roy.il Hotel Hamilton East. The circumstances attendant upon the closing of the house eOmc time previously would be fresh in the recollection of the Chairman It wob not closed on account of any offence committed, but simply becaune the then licensee who had really no interest in the house had neglected to sleep there once in every twenty dayn as required by the Act. The learned counsel B&id that if he remembered rightly the Chairman had expressed a wish that the license could then have been renewed but the provisions of the Act were so stringent that the hou*e had to be closed. Thus a very great hardship had been inflicted upon the owner and the lessee. In applying for a licenHe he hud not thought it necessary to bring plans &c, because the hotel was an old establi-hcd one <md was well-known to the Commisbioneis. He might tell them, however, that since the house had been closed it had been put m thorough repair. So far as he knew the police had no objections to offer. Sergeant McGovern haid the police offered no objection. He nrisfht state that the premises had been repined and painted throughout in a very neat and satisfactory manner. The woik was almost complete, only two bedrooms now remaining to be done, and thobG would be completed in a day or so. The license was granted. Mr Hay said he had an application to make in reference to the licence fee. He ■would ask the Bench to 1 educe the amount, say for a year, as thin Mas an exceptional case. The house had been closed for a length of time, and its, goodwill might be said to have goue, It had in fact to make a fresh start. After consultation, the Chairman said the Commissioners were of opinion that the hotpl, if well conducted, would regain all it might have lost. They would not theiefore make any luduction, Mr Hay made an application on behalf of Mr Dethmere for a liceDse for the Eailway Hotel, Frankton. The application was granted. Mr Hay applied for a reduction in the amount of the license fee foi the Hotel and urged that though it was a public convenience, it had never been a financial huccess. The Bench reduced the amount from £20 to JEIS.
