The Adelaide Cup. The New Zealand Horse Wins the Race. [REUTERS TELEGRAMS .] Adelaide, Thursday.
Mata, the- "dark un " for the last Melbourne Cup, and which cut auch a sorry figure in that race, has at length come to the front and disposed of Mr W. Branch's Progress, with 9st. 21bs. up, in the race for the A delaide Birthday Cup, run on the Queen's Birthday. The following is the order of running :—: — Mr H. Hatnes' b q Mata, by Traducer, dam Raupo, 9st. 21b3. . . . . 1 Mr W. Branch's br c Progress, by Angler, dam Coquette, 9st. . . 2 Crystal, 6st. 71bs 3 The following horses also started : — Savanaka, 9st. 21bs. ; Suwarrow, Bst. 121b5. ; Odd Trick, Bst. 51bs. ; The Vagabond, Bst. 21bs. ; Lothair, 7st. 81bs. ; Pawnbroker, 7st. ; Rothschild, 7st. ; Venus, 6st. Gibs. : President, 6st. ; Rifleman, 6st. 31bs. Mata won by two lengths. The ground was very slippery, owing to recent heavy rains. Melbourne, May 27. The Australian says that Matas victory in the Adelaide Birthday Cup fully justifies the disqualification of Mata after the Melbourne Cup. Mata was sold before the Adelaide race for 800 guineas. [Since noting the above, the Melbourne Australian fully bears out the remarks made by our sporting contributor, " Blue Gown," in our columns some short time since, as to the justness of Matas disqua-lification.-Ed. W.T.]
