The Tararua Disaster. Change in Command of Union Company's Steamers. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH, UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Thursday.
A statement having been made that the seamen and firemen of the Tararua, saved from the Tararua, were in want of assistance, the statement is now denied. Immediately after arrival from the wreck each received a month's pay, which was then due, and also a fit-out of clothing. The Union Company supplied clothing to the crew aud those passengers requiring it, at a cost of £100 ; also lxurd for a week. The Sailors' Union also distiibuted over €20 worth in clothing. The following .ire the ohmges decided on in the Union 0 impany'b service :—: — Captain Lojfan, of the Hero, goes Home to bring 1 out the Manipori, Captain MoGee, of the Taiaroa, succeeding him in the Hero ; Captain Anderson, Lite of the Y/ellington, j?ets the Taiaroa ; Mr. Webster, chief officeJ of the Te Anaii, is »ppointed to the Albiou ; Captain Jones', now of the Maori, is to be appointed to the Mutetipua, twin-?crew stea i er for the West Coast ; Mr. Mclutosh, chief officer of the Rotorua, succeeds him in the Maori ; Captain Orkney, now on a visit Home, is likely to brintr out. the Omapere, to be employed in the Westporfc coal ttade.
