Arrest of Midhat Pasha [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] The Murder of Abdul Aziz. Constantinople, May 17.

An' inquiry has been held into the confession of the four domestics of the Tcherazin Palace that they were concerned in the murder of Sultan Abdual Aziz in 1876. The evidence adduced has led to the accusation of Midhat Pasha (who was Grand Vizier at the time of the Sultan's death) of complicity in the crime. An Imperial decree has accordingly been issued, deposing Midhat Pasha from the position he occupies as Governor of Smyrna, and ordering his immediate arrest. News has, however, since been received from Smyrna to the effect that Midhat Pasha has fled from the city Later intelligence has been received by the Government from Smyrna that Midhat Pasha has not, as at first stated, fled from the city, but has ta'<en refuge in the French Consulate, and has appealed to the French and other foreign consuls for protection from arrest by the Turkish authorities. Constantinople, May 19. Telegbams have been received by the Government from Smyrna to the effect that Midhat Pasha was arrested to-day, the French and other consuls having refused to afford him an asylum from the Ottoman Minister of Justice.

The village of Brevieres, in Savoy, has been completely destroyed by two avalanches. The llrat occurred on the 13th inst., Vhen 22 persona were buried with the houses in the snow. Eleven were saved, four were found dead, and five v have not ,yet been recovered. There is no hope of recovering them ■ alive. The second avalanche has destroyed what remained of the village. Thirty-six persons w.ere buried boneath 45 to 60 feet of snow, Qoveriog 10,000 square yards.. Of these 27 have been resound and six dead. (Three-havd not yet been recovered. The losses are estimated at 230,000f.
