Native Assault. Auckland, Last Night.
At the Police Court to-day, Pikaka, a native, was charged with violently assanltmg TeHamiraTubia, atMechamcs 1 Bay. From the evidence, it appeared that plaintiff had given defendant two glasses of whisky, which led to the quarrelling. The Magistrate dismissed the case. Petty Plfering. Elizabeth Harvey, a young girl, was sentenced to two months imprisonment for stealing an ulster from St. Patrick's Cathedral Church.
Riverhead Murderous Assault. The accused has been remanded.
Brewery Fire. No clue has yet been obtained as to the cause of the fire which occurred at Bedell's brewery. The fire is allowed to have broken out in all parts of the building at once, and nothing could be done to save it. Insurances :— On buildings — National £1000, New Zealand £1000 ; on machinery and plant— Standard £600 ; on stock — Standard £300, New Zealand £600— Total, £3,500.
Tararua Disaster. The following insurance companies were affected by the loss of the Tararua : — £9000 in London insurance companies, and £3000 divided amongst colonial (New Zealand and New South Wales united) insurance companies.
Whangarei Harbour. Captain Fairchild reports that he has finished buoying Whangarei harbor, so effectually as to make it available for the largest steamers coming to New Zealand.
The Reported Wreck. A vessel just arrived reports that it was beating about the Great Barrier Island for three days, but did not see any wreck and does not believe any occurred.
House Breaking. Attempts were made last night to break into the shop of Mr Jones, tobacconist, next Cosgrave's. The Ponsonby Club Hotel was broken into, and the till, containing 16a, stolen.
