TOTAL WRECK OF THE STEAMER TARARUA. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
[The following was issued as an Extra yesterday affcernooD : — ] List of Survivors. The following is the corrected lint of survivors : — Grew : Robert Lindsay, chief officer ; Peter Marloney, second officer ; seamen. — Barnett Johnson (steward), Nicholson, Danz, Weston, Dickson, Rahel, Maher, Mikaleff. Passengers : Hill, Ohatterton, Laurence, Deely, Davis, Williams, Gustave Kellien, Robins, all steerage. The First Mate's Statement. The first mate's statement is that he turned in at 4 a. m. ; the captain and second mate "were on deck. At sor 6 a.m. the vessel struck. I went on deck, the engines were reversed, but it was no use, she struck aft, unshipped the rudder, and broke the prepeller ; the engines being of no use were stopped, and all hands called to clear the boats. Ten minutes after the engines were stopped the ship was full of water. At 5.30 the first boat was lowered with the second mate in charge, with four sailors and one passenger, to try for a landing. Lawrence Young, when boat was half way, swam ashore, having previously promised, if siiocvjs^ful, to remain and help at the landing of passengers. He did so, after finding way to Brenton's and causing to he sent the fivsfc telegraphic message by the station hand, Charles G-ellis, who rode 35 miles to Wyndhtim. The captain next sent the first mate in charge of a. boat containing three passengers and a boy, who all landed safe except the hoy, who was drowned. The boat capsi/ed, opened at both ends. Useless attempts at repairs were mad» by men on shore, but the sea was too heavy to launch. The vessel thumped heavily; the passengeis were in the rigging and clustered on the forecastle, a head sea breaking over heavily. Passengers Washed Overboard. At 2.30 a heavy sea washed several passengers, women and children, over ; and after tliat they dropped off one by one. A fearful cry was heard from the vessel during the night, and then all wu quiet, and in the morning she had disappeared. One of the survivors, the Maltese cook, who swam bravely for his own life, and tried to rescue a girl, state- that the Captain trot all ladies out of smoking-room to forecastle head, all being there till 2.30, when the aba washed fch'jra off ; the captain displayed coolness to last, his exclamation when all hopes were lost was <l Oh God what shall we do now !"
