The Sydney Gold Cup.
The race for the Sydney Gold Cup and 60080vf1., with a sweepstakes of 20sovs., distance two miles, was run for on Wednesday, with the following result: — Progress, Bst. 21bs 1 Strathern, 7st. 21bs 2 WanderiDg Jew, 6at. 41bs 3 Sixteen honses faced the starter. The Randwick course was in first-class condition, and the attendance large. A capital start was effected. Orient, Richmond and Hwperian at the fall of the flag made straight for the front, but were soon joined by Canary. Hesperian led round the turn and passed the grand stand first, followed by Black Bwan, Orient, Major, Templar, The Pontiff, Guild, The Barber, Richmond, Strathern, and Cynic. In the last round they raced in the same order until nearing the Trainer's Stand, whore Progress improved his position and came through the crowd, winning 1 easily by four lengths in front of Strathorn, who also made his way rapidly through the horses at the finish. Wandering Jew made a good third half a length behind Strathern, but only beating Richmond at the winning post by a head. Time —3mins. 36-18secs.
