Auckland, Last Night.

At the Police Court to-day, Wickham, proprietor of the Free Lance, was charged with criminal libel on Mr Hurst, in an article insinuating that he had been guilty of incendiarism, fraudulent insolvency, and stealing a specimen. Mr Hurat gave evidence, denying the whole of the charges. He said Wickham had repeatedly applied to him for advertisements prior to the appearance of the article which was complained of. He had never given him one. He threatened to make it hot for him (witness) if he did not give him an advertisement. On one occasion he threatened to ruin him socially and politically. Wickhara reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Two cases against publicans for Sunday trading were called at the Police Court but were dismissed, the evidence being insufficient. The National Bank advices state that an additional city endowment loan has been floated at 112. Mr Rolleston wrote to the Grammar School Board of Governors, stating that, having resigned the portfolio of Education, he could not undertake the office of procuring Head Master. A Committee was appointed to ascertain how Canterbury College had proceeded in making a recent selection.
