TE AWAMUTU DISTRICT SCHOOL.

On Tuesday, February Ist, Benjamin Lewis, a pupil of the above school, was presented with a certificate of competency, | gained by him at the recent examination for District Scholarships, held in Auckland. He will proceed to take advantage ; of the privilege, granted by the Board of Education, of attending the Auckland College and Grammar School. This it the first time that any such honour has been gained by a pupil in this district, and is highly gratifying to the teacher, Mr Benge, and also to the parents, and we trust that his success, and the advantages gained thereby, may serve as an impetus to those pupils who have yet their laurels to win. At the close of the afternoon school duties, the pupils presented Mr and Mrs Benge with a very handsome pair of bronze and marble candlesticks, with inkstand to match, together with the following address read by one of the senior scholars : To Mr and Mrs Benge, Te Awamutu District School. — Dear Sik and Madame. — We the pupils attending the Te Awamutu District School, beg to ofier you our congratulations upon your marriage, and also, as a small token of our esteems and regard, the accompanying present of an inkstand and pair of candlesticks. We trust that our relations as teachers and scholars may long continue to be of the same friendly nature, as at present. We consider it no flattery to inform you, that under your kind and interesting manner of imparting iustructions, we find the labour of learning such a pleasure that we are inclined to believe you have found out " a royal road to knowledge. ' ' Wishing you ' ' many happy returns" of the anniversary of your marriage, and health and prosperity waiting upon each. We beg to subscribe ourselves on behalf of our school-mates." — Very sincerely yours, Miriam Lewis, Annie Devin, Annie Mandine, Ada Tristram, Benjamin Lewis. Te Awamutu, February Ist, 1881.
