RAGLAN.
The " season "is now at it< hisrht. It is true that the marine parade is not at any time inconveniently crowded, and although bathing machines are rot procurour able, it must not be inferred therefrom that there are no bather?. Waiting for a bathing machine i* really of no use, so the majority of those who wish for "a dip in the briney," adopt the procefs of which it is presumed that Adam and Eve Availed themselves, after their expulsion from the jranlen of Eden. The hotell accommodation is all that can be desired. Plenty of fishing can be had hereabouts, and some shooting. This latter includes wild cattle and pigs. A visit to "The 'tation" at Te Akau, is one of the correct things to do. On arrival there one is always made to feel at home, and is most hospitably treated. Waikato tourists are visiting this pretty place more and more every year. The journey between Whatawhata and Raglan can be broken either at Mr Suttons Half-way Hotel, or at Mr John Moon's private boarding house. Here you get all the comforts of a home, with the addition of clotted cream, &c, ad lib. The pakeha from Waikato can have abundance of fish at Raglan, which is an aifreable* change to those who pass the greiter portion of their lives at some distance inland. I am porry to find that the Church of England has languished con iderably in tliiM district since the departure of the Rev. Mr Brady, who was so much liked by all the settlers of whatever denomination. This is not a matter of Mirprise, for Mr Brady was noted for his corteou*, gentlemany, and geniel character, virtues which are not possessed by all. The attendance at church la»t night, at which the Rev. Mr Philips held service, was, I am informed, considerably smnller than the average congregations here when the lay-reader officiates. It is a singular coincidence that at Ruapuke, as at Kihikihi, the parson was unable to obtain the use of the school- houpe. This, coupled with the fact that no one can be got at To Awamu f/Uf /U on the vestry, is a matter of much significence. 1 see that at Hamilton {happy Borough) there were no less than ten candidates nominated for the seven vacancies on that vestry. It mn<<t not be supposed that the number of church people has decreased, as the contrary is the fact. — (A Correspondent, Raglan, 3lsfc January, 1881.)
A writer with statistical predelection, says :—": — " The capital employed in feeding and clothing the civilized world is amazing. It is estimated that there are from 484,000,000 to 600,000,090 sheep in the world, or at the lowest estimate, 320,883 miles of sheep, if strung along, one closely following the other — or nearly enough to encircle the earth thirteen I times. Of these the United States have ! 36,000,' 00— that is, nearly enough to make a solid ' column of sheep, eight in , ( a row, from New, York to San Francisco. Great Britain has about the same number of sheep as the United State*, arid her wool clip increased from 94,000,0001b5. in 180 X to 325,000,000169. •in 1,876. France and Austria t produce ■.bout as lnwsli, but the United States pro- '• duct is only about 200b,000,OODlbs.—- not two-fchirds of that of Great Britain, The . great sheep-breeding countries of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the KiTef Plate, theHoial wool clip of the world last year up to 1,497,600,000, worth, at a lo\r estimate, $300,000,00(1.
