In almost every corner of our little empire wheie the white man dwelleth the customary New Year's fetes lie held. At Waihou the sports were Mich as and have A one ciechfc to much older and larger commuuities, it was carried out with so much vigor, energy, and enthusiasm. Visitois assembled fiom all parts of the di&tuct, bunting floated in the breeze from j\Jissen's hotel, a band added to the clwrm by gladdening already joyous heaits, the gay <ittne of the people with the sombre Te Arolia mountain looking down on all, and the peaceful and sinuous Waihou River, mado a ccenc piotmesque in the extreme. Two Hundred Yards Maiden* Race, fivo competitors appealed. The race was won easily. Ticklepenuy, first; Cleaiy, second. Fust pmc, 20s ; second, 7a 6d. One Hundred Yards, for boys under 14 years. Nine entries. McLauren, fiist; becond, Karu. fiirst prize, 10s ; second, 2s Gd. This was a very close race, the winner landing with a foot only to spaie. Running High Jump was won by P. Lynch' clearing 1 4 feet 11 inchesi with Karau 2nd. First prize, 10s. Eight entries. v Onk Hundred Yak ds Handicap. After a nock-in-neck race, H. Rowe -vyon, with Whitehead second. Eirst prize, 20s ; second, 03. Ten entries. One Hendred Yabds for Boys under 10 years. A very good run, with Debars first, and Webb second. Thirst prize, ss ; second; 2s 6d. Hop Step and Jump followed, and was won by Karu, with P. Linch close up. Prize, 10s. Karu covered 39 feet 6 inches. Half-milk Handicap was won [somewhat easily by H. Hyde, withW. Hyde second. First prize. 30s ; second, 10s. Valting with the poll, Karu, first, volting 8 feet G inches ; Andrews, second. Prize, Lss. Standing Higu Jump. Cleary, 4 feet 2 inches. Prize, 10s. Quarter-mike Hurdles Raoe. This was a fine race, and altho won by Debars, W. Hyde was close up and making ground fast at the finish. Nine entries. JTirst prize, 30a ; second, 10. Throwing the Heavy Hammer. MoCormic. Prize, 15. This was the last event of tke programme, and finished one of the most thorough and genuine days sports that ever the sun ehon on. In the evening a number of visitors and) friends sat down to supper at the invitation of Host Missen of the Te Aroha Hotel, and'it is not too much to say that the • table literally groaned under the substantial and delicate aliments and fruits of the season.
