TE A WAMUTU POLICE COURT. Wednesday, January 5. — [Before Edward Parsons, Esq., J.P.] Larceny.
James Howe was brought up and charged on the information of Constable Gillies with having Btolen ono sovereign, the property of Andrew S. Dick, at Kikikihi, on December 31, 1880. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Mr Dick stated that he was at Kihildhi on December 31, and got wet. Ho went to Balfe-'s Hotel and asked for a room to change his clothes. Prisoner assisted him in taking off his wet things. While in the act of doing so, a sovereign, with some silver, fell on the floor. Prisoner picked it up and gave it to him. He (Dick) never looked if he had the sovereign or not, but shortly after missed it. It was further proved by several witnesses that previously prisoner had no money, but after this he went on the spree and spent money to the amount of one pound. Sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour.
