FIRES IN AUCKLAND.
A KRB broke out about 8 o'clock on Sunday morning in the premises of Mr Alfred Buckland, known as the Haymarket, Durham-street, which resulted in the complete destruction of the building. The fire was first discovered in the upper Storey in that portion of the building where the wool, flax, tow, and other inflammable commodities wero stowed away, and is supposed to be caused by spontaneous combustion. Very shortly alter the dincoveay of the fire the Fire Brigade, Salvage Corps and the police were on the ground, but although they used their utmost exertions they only succeeded in confining the flames to the building in which they originated. Water was kept pouring in upon the fire all day but, with the exception of tome horsea and vehicle.*, nothing was saved. The [Brigade under Superintendent Hughes, worked admirably, the greater number of them receiving injuries more or less severe from falliDg objects. The following insurances had been effected: — National, £2000 on building ; New Zealand, £3000, on stock; South British, £1000, stock. Total, £6000. Mr Buckland; however, estimates his loss at about £2000 over and above the insurances. At a very early hour yesterday morning the police discovered a fire in the shop of Messrs Hewin Bros., Queen-street, and - on breaking open the door found a mass of, paper alight in one of the compartments behind the counter. It was quickly extinguished. No cause is assigned for this Occurrence. Two or three hours later a bedroom in the Cosmopolitan Hotel was found to be on fire, but little damage was done before 'jfcjie flames, which were principally contilled to window-curtains, were put'out.
