Whatawhata Races.
The morning of January Ist, contrary to expectations, turned out fine, and the weather throughout the day was most pleasant. There was a much smaller attendance at the races than has been for years pact, the late bad weather having no doubt something to do with it. About fifty visitors came up from Ngaruawahia by the s.s. Alert. The races were well contested, and, with the exception of a few spills occasioned by cattle grazing on the course, no accidents occurred. The first race was the
HURDLE RACE. Blink Bonny 1 Kairaina . . > . 2 Derrio . . . < . . 3 There was no baulking, and it was a good race from start to finish. It was an easy victory for Blink Bonny.

Stanley 1 } Sweet Briar . . . . . . 2 Tandem 3 J?or this race, Sultan and Stanley -were about equal in the publio estimation, buc after starting Sultan got rid of his rider, and so lost what chance he may hare had. PONT BACE. Wee Pet 1 Mignionette 2 Wee Pet was declared favourite, and there was no pony equal to the task of beating her, but Corboy's little mare made a good fight for it, and pushed the winner tit the finish.
! SECTEEBs' BIOS. Hope's Buoksfoot 1 Louis ... 2 Mignionefcte .. ... 3 The programme was brought to a conclusion with' the Consolation. This was practically a rauo between Orakau and Sultan. The horses raced well together until nearly home, when Orakau forged ahead, winning by a length.
