Frankton Annual Athletic GaitherPresident : Mr Thomas Jolly. Judge : Mr~ A. S. Black;-— Handicappers : Messrs Coleman t and Coombes, and Starter : Mr A..J3. Black. "Notwithstanding the ' counter demonstrations at Huntley awl Whatawhata on Saturday, last, the»Fratikton sports may be said to have gained a fair share of public patronage, and those who possessed themselves of the opportunity of witnessing them, will agree with us in saying that the sports were in every respect successful. Apparently the boisterous aspect of the morning threatened the usual holiday seekers amongst the country settlers, and the almost entire absence of this class may, to some degree be attributed to this .cause. However, it may be reasonably computed that fully 300 persons were present, composed principally of Hamilton and Te Awamutu people. On the ground one solitary game of chance man put in an appearance — not of the usual loquacious type— and we are inclined to think that the fortune made, by this individual was somewhat limited. L. R. James had a booth in which he retailed spirits— not evil ones — and two other enterprising fruit vendors were patronised by the copper-laden youngsters. A better paddock for such gatherings could not be obtainabb, and the little circular course was in excellent condition. The gathering was of an orderly and respectable character, and with the exception of one noisy inebriate was of unusual sobriety. Nothing militated against the success of the day, and those who were not interested in the athletic portion of the prooeedinga betook themselves apart with their fair partners, formed themselves into kissing nogs, and thus passed their holiday. The dinner provided by host James at the Railway Hotel was an excellent one, and was ex-ten.-ively patronised. Subjoined are the results of the day's sports. :— Maiden Race. — Prize, 20s. entrance, X Burt 1 W.Jones 2 Two others entered for this race, and it being the first event of the day created great interest. Rice forßoy.s under 13 years (handicap). — Ist prize. 10s ; 2nd, ss. Entrance, Is. Ruhei (Maori) 1 W. Ellen Barker 1 Jane Wright 2 This was an event of unusual interest, fifteen having entered for it. The prize being no less valuable than useful, the manias were exceedingly anxious that their daughters should carry it off. Long Jump (Standing).— Prize, 20s. McKinnon makes an exceedingly good hop, but is unable to pick himself up. 440 Yards Hurdle Race (Handicap), — Ist prize, 20s; 2nd, 10s. Entrance, Is (3d. J. Warr 1 W.Hyde 2 There were six entries for this event, and it was one of the most exciting throughout the day. The hurdles were well cleared, and the running remarkably good. Burke had a long start, and it was thought he would win, but Warr, who was heavily handicapped, overtook him, and won by a few feet. Running High Jump. — Prize, 20s, Entrance, Is. Honi (Maori) ... • 1 Mays 2 One Mile Rack (Handicap). — Ist prize, silver cup ; 2nd, 10s. Entrance, 3s 6d. W. Hyde 1 Burke 2 This was the event of the day, and many came specially to see it. The silver cup was a great inducement, but the large entrance fee prevented many competitors from joining. The competitors took it easy for the first three-quarters, and Hyde, who was heavily handicapped, gradually diminished the distance between himself and those in front, and when he had gone the third round was almost in the lead, with Burke beside him. The spurt was put on in the last quarter, and Hyde crept gradually away, winning easily, with Burke a good second. Three-Lkgged RAOE.—lat prize, 10s J 2nd, ss. Entrance, Is. ' Messrs Reid and Ward . . 1 There were four entries far this event, and it created much merriment. The running of the winning couple was exceedingly good.
