TE AROHA. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

A general exodus 13 taking place till after the holidays. Scarcely two hundred men are left on the field, many of whom are leaving to-day, and work, both in the mines and township is almost at a standstill, and will not be resumed until the first Monday in the New Year, on which day the protection expires. It is then expected that work will be pushed on vigorously, and all parties, companies included, will be made to fully man their ground. A large number of buildings are in a forward state, and efforts will be made by the few carpenters left in the ' township, to have them ready for opening by the new year. With regard to the mines, very little of special interest has transpired within the last day or two. The Tui, Catran and party's claim, have reached the hanging wall of the reef, which is nine feet thick; the! prospects obtained are very good, and this part of the field promise to become highly valuable. The Homeward Bound, Omahu, No 1, and several other claims are on this line of reef, and the country closely resembles the Kurunui Hill at the Thames. The Prosperity, Freeman and party sent down, under charge of Mr Freeman, 1 1 cwt. of stone, which, when crushed, yielded the payable return of 16 dwts of retorted gold. The Cambridge Claim, Lambert and party, eight men's ground, bituated just

above the Don, and bounded by the Bright Smile and the Golden Eagle, have been doing good work since they commenced. No. 1 drive is in about 30 feet, and they are now driving in a reef 3 feet 6 inches Lin thickness, from which they intend to take a good trial crushing after the holidays. In No. 2 drive they are following up a leader which was exposed on the Hurface. They are in about 15 feet, with very encouraging prospects. The Eureka, LivingvStoue and party, have cut a leader in their drive, in which gold is to be seen, and they arc now putting in a T dnre to te>t it. The following new claims have been pegged out : — The Buttercup, 10 men's ground — H. Ellibon and party. Spanker Boom, 6 men's pround — S. Pascoe and party. — December 24.
