ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL VIA SAN FRAN CISCO IN AUCKLAND.
European Summary. Auckland, Yesterday. The Australia arrived from San Francisco this morning. Passengers — Messrs Hay, R Pulleino, Larch, Mills, Gregory, Curtin, Pearson, Williams, Paul, Litchfield, Adness, May. Appleby, Me^dames [ Mills, McDougall, Misses Paul, Brownlie (Dunedin), Captain David Roulph, and 15 in steerage. London (undated). The evictions of miners' families in Durham are conducted with great ooielfcy. The weather is severe, and there is much suffering among the women and children. The Reverends Enrick and Green, Ritualists, have been imprisoned for contempt.
Ireland. The members of the Land League are investing their means i n foreign securities, and removing books and paper*. The situation is growing more alarming. The anti-reat combination is extending to hitherto peaceful districts. The reports that tho peasantry are arming i* d lily confirmed. The Pope countenances all proper agilntion, but condemns all violence. Pailiament prorogued on December 2. A number of Fenian leaders are report* d in i J aris. Evans, the head centre, is expected early in December. Pabis (undated). The resignations of magistratps, on account of religious decrees, continue. The exiles are flocking- to Spain, and are favourably received by the nobles and officials. The Vatican protests against a number of Socialists, expected trom Hamburg, Altona, and towns of Schle^ing and Holstem. By a succession of earthquakes at Agam, Austria, half the town was destroyed, causing great panic and distress. Sax Francisco, Nov. 21.
American Items. The steamer Ailoa has been lost and 34 hands drowned off St. Eoverns Head. The Chilians are ravaging the north of Peru, and are momentarily expected to ! attack Lima. By a colliery explosion at Stillarton, Nova Scotia, 40 per&ons were killed. The Insane Asylum at St. Peter's, Minnesota, has been burned to the ground. Many inmates perished by fire and cold. The election of Garfield is mainly due to quarrels amongst the Democrats in New York on local issues, giving him that State. An outbreak of smallpox has taken place at San Francisco. Over one hundred cases have been reported during the last few days and several deaths have occurred.
