Auckland, Last Night. A discovery of quartz near Pokeno was made about three milee from the station in a well-defined reef. The range in which the discovery was made is of a ttioular character to the Thames. At a meeting of the North Auckland Cattle Board it was agreed that the cattle on board the Coomerang, belonging to Horwood, be allowed to land and conveyed to Buokland s sheds and pddocks at Newmaiket, and to be kept installed from all other cattle, or to Wiggen's stables, as may be approved of by the Inspector. The voting for the Board of Education vacancy resulted as follows : — Goldie, 68; Buckland, 20 ; Fairburne, 16 ; Macffarlane, 7 ; Mulgan, 2. At a meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the question introduced by Mr Lamb to do away with the bird nuisance, was discussed. Several samples of grain was shown, which had suffered severely by their depredation, in fact, rendered quite valueless. Samples of wheat from Mr "Wall's farm was especially brought under notice. After some discussion on Mr Lamb's motion it was resolved that the Association should, at the end of the season, endeavour to get farmers universally to go in for buying poisoned grain, so as to reduce the pest, and that a sum may be set apart at an annual meeting in aid of this object. The Board of Education has accepted Mr Thomas's tender, £204, for the erection of a school at Rangiaohia. Alexandra Wishart, £329, for teacher's residence, Taupiri ; £222 for a school at Churchill.
Wellington, Last Night. The Governor makes a tour of the colony early next year, visiting the North Island districts first, and the South Island next, subsequently meeting Lady Gordon at the Bluff in March. Mr Bryce, Native Minister, hag returned from Wanganui, overland The natives have discontinued fencing, and merely guard a gap in the fence where the road crosses a field of sown wheat. The " Gazette" contains the terms and conditions of the special grant m Te Aroha Block to Messrs Grant and Poster.
Nelson, Last Night. Mr Acherson, Superintendent of Police, while getting off the tramcar, last night, before it had quite stopped, fell breaking his left arm above the elbow. The fractnre is a bad one, but his medical adviser says he will be able to resume his dutieg shortly.
