SPORTING. Match between Harold and Gilderoy .

A match between Mr E. R. Laings eh q Harold, and Mr McKinnon's b c Gilderoy, for £100 a-side, came off on the Ohaupo Racecourse on Saturday. The event excited considerable interest among sporting men, of whom a goodly number turned up at the appointed hour, 12 o'clock. The conditions of the race were : — Distance, twice round the course, weight, 9st. slbs up. Mr Richard Gwynne performed the duties of starter and judge, and Mr Robert Bradley acted in the capatity of clerk of the scales. Wheu the two horses stripped and came on the course, it was evident that both had their admirers, and the betting was about even. Gilderoy was in splendid form, while Harold appeared to bo if anything a trifle too fine. The drawing for places resulted to Harold's advantage, and a very good start was effected by Mr. Gwynne. Gilderoy however, quickly sprang to the front peemingly a little awkward to handle, and was leading at the quarter mile post by fully two lengths. This he increased until opposite the stand he was about four lengths ahead of his opponent, who seemed to be doing his utmost. Harold slowly lessened the distance to two lengths passing the stand, and when half way round the second time was scarcely a length beLind. Up to this time however, Gilderoy had not been called ou but when the other horse came up to his flank he answered to the whip and bounded forward coming in a winner by a little more than two lengths. Time j 3mins. 56^ecs. The race throughout was a very pretty one and the interest in it was increased by the kno wledge that everything was done on the square. Two or three of the betting fraternity were on the ground, and a considerable sum of money changed hands. At the conclusion of the race, the visitors were kindly entertained with refreshments by Mr Gwynne, and on their return to Hamilton Mr McKinnon opened a case of champagne. Gilderoy, who is by Traducer, dam by Bay Camden, has improved wonderfully since last season, and, if we are not much mistaken, will be heard of in better company before long.
