TO-DAY'S RACES.

The meeting to be held to-day at the ©haupo Racecourse under the auspices of the Waikato Turf Club will, we have little doubt, prove a thorough success. The excitement produced by the opening of the new goldfield has probably turned the minds of many people from the contemplation of anything 1 less important than gold — and few thing's in this century are of greater importance, — but there must be still a few left who can find time to enjoy the old English sport of horse-racing. The fields will be in all cases good, and with fine weather the course will be in excellent order. For the Hurdle Race five horses, and for the Spring Handicap seven horses have acoopted. For the Novel Race and the Cavalry Plate the contests, laying as they do in each case between two horses, will not prove of much interest, but the Maiden Plate, for which seven have entered, ought to be a good race. McGee's Mother Bunch's Baby will not put in an appearance, having been unavoidably left behind. The foreign horses have been in Waikato some days, and all appear in excellent form. For the Hurdle Race, the contest will in all probability lie between old Sportsman and Harold, though there are not wanting those who pin their faith to Loafer. King Quail will probably pull off the Handicap, although, considering the difference in the weights, he may find it warm work to keep in front passing the Judges' box. After Gilderoy's performance on Saturday, I shall not expect to see him last, the more especially as he will carry a licrht weight. Of the two going for the Novel Handicap, Ninette is not known, but she is spoken of as "likely." It will probably be a close race. The Maiden will, I think, be pulled otf by McKinnon's Strathearn. The colt is in grand condition, and, to my mind, has only got to run straight to win. The Cavalry Plate, in my opinion, will go to Orakau/ Blue Gown.
