WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

Annual Meeting. This annual meeting of the Council was held at the County Chambers yesterday. Present : Capt. Steele, (chairman), Crs. '' Henry, Gumming, Kirkwood, R. H. D. ' Fcrguason, nnd Primrose. ; Tlie minutes having been read and con- ' firmed, the Council proceeded to the ; election of a chairman for the ensuing year. Cr. dimming moved that the present chairman be reelected. Cr. Primrose seconded, and there being no other nomination, Capt. Steele was declared unanimously elected. The Chairman returned thanks for his election, and explained his reasons for postponing the last meeting of the Council, which he said was owing to his having to go away on public business. He had sent notices to the Councillors but was sorry that two of the number of the Councillors had not received their notices, He owed an apology to them. He would j like to know whether the chairman had power to adjourn meetings. Cr. Fergusson considered that when the Council were adjourned care should be taken to give due notice to the members. He thought it undesirable for the chairman to adjourn meetings except with the consent of two Councillors. Cr. Kirkwood thought at least fortyeight hours notice should be given. Cr. Fergussun thought it should be understood that due notice should be given. He could not have received the delayed telegram sent him, until 9 o'clock a.m., ou the day of meeting, by which time he would be on his vay to Hamilton. The Chairman, said he would in future take care to give duo notice and the matter dropped. Correspondence was read from the Railway Department, intimating that part of the land taken at Huntley, had been so taken under the Public "Works Act, and the remainder had been conveyed to the Government. The Clerk reported that nothing f urther had transpired regat ding the Cattle pen at Huntley. It was resolved that the clerk write to the Railway authorities asking if they would erect the pen providing the Council would contribute £50, failing which if the Council would undertake the work, asking if the timber could be carried free. Mr Dilworth in reference to the matter of his rate*, and in reply to a letter from the Council asking him to pay a portion of the cost of collecting his rates. I He exprsssed hie surprise at such a request and stated that lie himself had been put to serious los* in the matter. Ihe clerk stated that the Council had lost in subsidyand expenses a sura amounting to over £60 by not paying his rates. It was resolved to write Mr Dilworth to that effect intimating that in future the Council would not deal so leniently with him. It was resolved to write a^ain to the late collector for the out district regarding certain amounts for commission. The clerk reported that as the newDog Tax Act would come into forca on the Ist January, it would be necessary to take the requisite steps to carry it out in this county. He had- ordered forms &c and wished the Council to appoint a registrar. After discussing the matter it was lesolved to appoint the Clerk registrar, who was authorised to make the best, arrangements regarding the distribution of forms, &., and to call for tenders for the supply of collars by advertisement in the VVaikato Times. Regarding the County Chamber allotment, it was agreed to leave the mntter of leasing or fencing to a s.'.b-connnittee, consisting of Crs. dimming and Primrose to report at next meeting. The Chairman asked if the present would be a favorable time to urge upon the Government the necessity of pushing on the Thames railway. Cr. Fergusson thought little would be done before the session Cr. Kirkwood thought they should also remind the Government about the Cambridge line. It was agreed that the Chairman and Clerk communicate with the Government. It was decided that during 'the ensuing year the meetings be held on the Friday before the full moon in each month. An account from Mr Coxhead for work done in the Uangiaohia district, £3 Bs, was passed for payment. Messrs. Hesketh ■ and Richmond's account, £3 13s, im connection with the Boiough claim, w.is al->o passed. The Council then ) ose.
