HAMILTON CONTINGENT TE AWAMUTU CAVALRY.

Owing to the inclemency of the weather on Tuesday the members of the Hamilton Contingent were prevented from being exercised in the mounted drill, and were in consequence put through manual and sword exercise in the Government stables. Tho number on parade were about 30 of all ranks. Yesterday, tho men assembled on the parade ground and proceeded to the rifle range, where rapidity ball practice was indulged in. The conditions were as usual, riding in half sections, quarter of a mile at speed, dismounting, picketing hordes, and firing at target at 200 yards, time allowed being thrpe minutes. The best scores were made by Troopers McNicol and Cochrane, and Sergeant Wood and Trooper DavK Aft6r tins practice and until nearly one o'clock the men were put through the manual and swonl 1 exercise by Ctiptiin Whitaker. At 2 o'clock the Troop paraded and inarched to Jolly'.s paddock, near the railway station, for inspection by Col. Lyon. '1 he men were drawn up in line, and received the inspecting 1 officer with a general salute. The Tr,uop was then marched past by squadrons; then ranked pnsfc by files; then gallopped pa-st by squadrons ; then charged past by squadrons ; then performed the pur-urn^ practise. The ranks were re-formed and the Troop handed over to Lieut. Johnson, aud afterwards to SubLieut. Hunt, who severally put the men through a series of nmmeuvre*, to the satisfaction of the Colonel. The whole of the evolutions were performed in a very creditable manner, and at the close Colonel Lyon, addressing a few words to the men, complimented them upon their efficiency and soldierlike appearance, and hoped they would continue to take an interest in the Volunteer movement. The Troop then returned to town, where they were drawn up in line, aud the officers having 1 addressed a few parting 1 words, the order to " dismiss" was given, and the half-yearly drill ended.
