ARRIVAL OF THE RIGHT REV. LORD ABBOT ALCOCK, 0.5.8., AT HAMILTON.
His Lokdship arrived by the evening train on Saturday, and was driven to his residence by Mr E. McGarrigle. His Lordship celebrated Mass at 11 o'clock on Sunday, and gave a very learned and impressive discourse on his mission, and that of his brethren in religion to this Colony. He said: "We have come among you, dear children in JESUS CHRIST, not of our own will, but by the command of the highest authority in the Catholic Church on earth. We have come amongst you not to make money, because if you gave me one thousand pounds to-day I could not call one penny of it my own ; it would have to go to the Church, and if I died to-morrow I could not will one pound of it to any of my relations. We are vowed to poverty, and all we do we do for the honor and glory of God." The discourse was listened to by the congregation with breathless silence, and it evidently made a deep and lasting impression on ali present. His Lordship officiated at Vespers, and gave the Benediction of the BLESSED SACRAMENT. After Vespers he preached an eloquent and instructive sermon. The arrival of the Lord Abbot and the Rev. Father Luck, 0.5.8., in Waikato marks an epoch in the history of Catholicism in this district, and will bring Spiritual joy and comfort to many a home.
