WEATHER FORECASTS.
Mr Logik, the officer in charge of the Hamilton Telegraph Station, has received the following from Commander Edwin, which lie has kindly placed at our disposal • — Wellington, September 17, 1880. Sir, — I have to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the copies of the various warnings of bad weather which have been forwarded to you through this office, and am glad to be able to state that the remarks which you have forwarded on the messages have been very useful. The period for which I have most of your remarks is that between the 12th July and 28th August in this year, and I find that they give the following values of correct forecasts per cent. : — Direction of wind . . 83 - 3 per cant. Force of wind . . 33 3 Estimate of barometer movement . . 72 "2 Estimate of rain . . 761) This ratio of success is. to me at all events, satisfactory, when I know that the material for forecast is of far less amount than that required in other countries, and much of the success of New Zealand forecast is due to the care and intelligence of those who observe and transmit the work. — I have, etc., K. A. Edwin-, Commander, R.N. Mr H. Lo«ie, Telegraph Office, Hamilton.
