THE BEER TAX AGAIN. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — Now that the lion, member for Waipa is again amongst 'his constituents I wish to refer to the above subject. I know it lias been already very freely ventilated,, and the hon. member's vote thereon, by "A Working Man" and ' ' Another Working Man, " but my version of the subject has not yet been touched. I write, not as a working man, because I don't like work ; but I may say I am a slashing good drinker, Ido not so much object to the threepenny tax* or even a sixpenny one for that matter, but what I do object to is ' the unduly large quart bottle of said beer that will' on a pinch run qu^ six ,or seven half-jiint glasses, so by that means defrauding the revenue oi duty on three half-pints of. bqer out of each bottle. For this I know the brewers are responsible, which is very wrong, and I hope the hon. member will see to it. . There, is; another light to view if in : if a man wants a quart of beer lie ought to get it and not be obliged to drink seven half-pints and involuntarily join that great army of intemperates. These halfpints ought to be seen to, #s they tend to demoralise the rising generation. I be- , lieve the law of England at present is that every measure in use or otherwise in any public-hduse has to be stamped, and I hope the same precaution will be taken in this country so that if a working man wants a quart, a pint, or half-a-pint he will get it and not a drop more, so that his sobriety may be maintained and the revenue in a flourishing condition. — I am, etc., A Good Drinker.
