CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC HALL.
A mk£ti.v<; of the Public Hall Committee was held on Wednesday to consider the steps necessary to be taken to have the sign-board erected by Mr Wells removed from the ground adjoining the Hall. There were present Messrs W. L. 0. Williaim, H. A. Keesing, R. Hough ton, J. T. Camp, .X. P. Thompson, Captain Runciman and Lieutenant Fisher. After discussion the following resolutions were earned: (1) "That the Secretary inform Mr Thomas Wells that no permission having been granted to erect a sign-board on the ground leased by him, adjoining the Public Hall, he be requested to remove the same by 4 o'clock p.m." (2) That the ' ommittce do not approve of the part of the Hall property leased by Mr Wells being used as au advertising medium in any form. (.'») That the Chairman sign tlie resolutions and the Secretary forward a copy of the same to Mr Wells. A subsepuent meeting was held same day at the Fanners' Club at 4 p.m. Present: Captain Runciman, Messrs. Williams, Brooks, Camp, Fisher, Houghton and Thompson. The following communication was read :—: — The Chairman Cambridge Hall Committee, and Gentlemen belonging i thereto. i
" Gentlemen, — I have received a copy of' your resolutions re 'lease of Public Hall grounds to Mr Wells,' and will hand the same to him to-night upon his return from Auckland. I would auk you kindly to let thi>» matter stand over till to-morrow for Mr Wells's personal consideration. But if, at the same time, any force should be employed in the attempted removal of the sign-board objected to, I shall consider it my duty, as Mr Wells's representative, to give such persons as may bo engaged therein into the custody of a constable on a criminal charge. — I am, &c, T. H. W. Mobbis."
The following resolution was carried : — ' That the Secretary reply to Mr Morris, and inform him that the following gentlemen will wait on Mr "Wells on his arrival from Auckland this evening-: — Messrs. Williams, Thompson, and Captain Runoiman re ' resolution passed relative to the removal of signboard,' and to state that the same must he removed by 7 a.m. on the 21st inst., failing which, the sub-com-mittee be empowered to remove the same." Mr Wells arrived at Cambridge on the same evening and the deputation waited on him and communicated to him the result of the meetings. He however, declined to remove the sign -board, and *o for the present the matter rostd.
