THE CAMBRIDGE FARMERS' CLUB'S ANNUAL CATTLE SIIOW.
President : Every Maclean Esq. VicePresidents : James Runciman Esq., and Francis Hicks Esq. General , Comntfttee of Management : Every Maclean Esq., A. A. Fantham Esq., F. Hicks Esq., G eo . E. Clark Esq., John Fisher Esq., W. L. Martyn Esq., R. H. D. Fergusaon Esq., Jas! Runciman Esq . J2. B. "Walker Esq., Thomas "MorrinKsq., Richard Reynolds Esq.,' Henry Buttle Esq. Secretary ; Walter Scott. As though tho internal influences were not feufficiently distressing, the weather on Thursday morning was bad enough to deter many from going to the Show. Day broke in a torrent of rain which continued till about 9 o'clock. Thence the day was dull with a cloudy, threatening sky but fortunately no rain fell again till far in tho evening. The limit of the time for bringing the exhibits on the ground was 9.30 a.m. hut at that hour rery few had arrived and it was thought i advisable to extend the time ; Borne of the stock, horse stock more particularly, not arriving till 11 o'clock. About that time there were only a few spectators on the ground and the judgeß proceeded without interruption to their duties. Towards noon the number of sightseers bepan to increase and during the day some 600 or 700 people put in an appearance. The Cambridge and Waikato Reed Band (under Bandmaster Mackintosh) was in attendance, and during the day played a number of selections in their usual fine style. An awning had been erected for thoaccomodotion of the band, not so much it is to be presumed to keep off thewun, as to protect the players from the impending rain. Tho leisure moments of the i onlookers, were further beguiled by three or four of tbo gentry usually found at gatherings of this kind and who j gull the public not so much by the worth - lessness of their goods as hy their per-ua-j sive eloquence, Of the exhibits, the little which is necessary to be said we will say further on, in the meantime it i mny be remark- d that the quality was I good, the defect being as we have said in quantity. The horses, cattle and sheep, or at any rate such of them as carried away the honors, would bo hard to beat, J aud the exhibits of swiue would not have ! disgraced many a more pretentious Show. The dairy produce on the other hand was miserable and the poultry mms just us bad. Of doga there was a fair show but with one or two exceptions, the animals discovered no particular merit. Implements were very poorly represented, there being competition in only six classes on ■ of 23. There was not a single roller, mower, reaper, or waggon exhibited, and yet there are plenty of these implements in I the district. The arrangements were — it must be admitted — admirable. There was not the slightest confusion, and when i it is remembered that no more trouble would have been entailed had the number of entries been a thousand instead of a hundred or two, this fact will be duly appreciated. Much of this is due to tho I energetic and agreeable Secretary of the ! club, who was most ably seconded i in his efforts by the members of the com- [ mifctee. The following- is a somewhat more detailed account of tho Ecvcral | classes :—: —
Horses. Judares: Mcssr*. F Dibble, D. McKinnon,and.T. Johns. Stewards: Messrs. Alwill, R. Fisher and Howie. In ela«s 1, Blood Entirps, there were only two entries, Mr Fergusons " Fove" and Mr Walters' Hippocampus. Both tho horsps had been brought out extremely well, and both attracted the attention of the judges Avho h warded the first pike to Feve and second to Hippocampi. In class 2, "three-year-old entires," there wa* only one entry, Mr Fergusson's fine httlo bay hoise Blackcock, and as possessing superior merit the judges awarded him a hr.st prize. In cla.ss 3, thero were no eutrics, and in class i, yearling colts only one. Mr Alwill's colt by Knottinirty dam Clipper to which ho prize was awarded. Class .), " mare in foal," brought out three exhibit", Mr Alwill's fine little mare Clipper carrying oft' the honors against Memento, (»amo owner) and Mr HorsfaU'd fitio bay mare " Jcuny Lind." In clans (5, " thron. year- old nlliec." Mr Fergus?onV Olive" was the .mly exhibit bnt thcjjudiros displayed little hesitation \n awarding a first prize, on account of the exceeding fine qu ility of the candidate Incloses 7 and 8 there wore no entries. There wat only onn entrj' in class 9, ''Roadster En Tires," Mr Lake's five powerful horse " Hercules," to whom a first prize was awarded. In elas-f 10 there was one entry, but no ptizi wan 1 awarded. In class 12 Mr "\V. K. Carter's filly was the only exhibit, and secured a red tLkefc. In class 11, " Weight-carry-ing Hacks/ there was a keen competition. There were seven cntiks, and »11 exhibited. The judges took somo tune to make t'rteir aw aid, but eventually g.ive the first prize to Mr J. S. Buckland'.-, " Cl.isper," :i fine looking black hoi.s*, thoujrh somewhat old. MrR. H. D Fevgu&smi's •' S™, King secured second juVe, while Mr E!hs\s creamy gelding w,ts commended. In tlu next chss, "Lidies" Hacks," thero were hix competitors but thp judges speedily reduced tho nutuhor of the likely ones to two. awauliuy th" fir^t pri/o to Mr Buck.-, "JOmu," and the second to Mr S. Ji (I. Smith'a '"Dainty." Them wcic five entries iv the cla.ss for huguy horseo, but ouly four competed, a white goiding, the property of Mr E. B. Walker"; a bay mare of Mr Rayne^' ; a grey trelding of Mr Douglas's ; an I a bay gelding of Mr Reynolds'^, In the opinion of many people all the exhibits, with the exception of Mr Raynes' mare, should have been shown as light-harness horses. However, tho judges going apparently upon what they had before them, awarded the fir.st prize to Mr Walker, and the second to Mr Douglas. There was only one entry in the class for " pair of buggy horses, 1 ' but no prize was awarded. As extra stock, Mr Fergusson exhibited a two-year-old colt by " Fere," and Mr Houghton. a two-year-old pony by Knottingly, both of which the judges commended. Iv draught horses, there were only a few exhibits. In class 18, "entires," there were only two competitors. Mr Berry's well-known horse "President," and Mr Jucke'a "Young Lincoln," a fine specimen of the Suffolk Punch. Tho certificate was awarded to the former. In cla*s 21," yearling colts," Mr Fanthams exJiibit ost oi Blossom by Loch Fergus was the only one, and was commended by the judges. In the next four classes thero wero no exhibits, and in class 20 only one, a mare, the property of Mr K. B. Walker, to which was awarded a first prize. A fine team of three horses, belonging to Mr R. H. D. Fergusson, secured a first prize, although it was the only entry. Tho champion prize of to, for the best blood entire, was won by "Fevo." Thero were no entries for the champion prizes in tho roadster and draught clusses. Of the private prizes, there was not sufficient competition for the cup offered by Mr R. H. D. Fergusson for the best foal got in 1879 by "Fcvc" although the foals exhibited by Messi-s. Gr. K. Clark and Allwill were both worthy of commendation. Messrs. Maclean & Co.'s five-guinea cup for the best yearling got by Fen Court entires was won by Mr Fantham. Mr O. E. Clarks five-guinea euj> for the thoroughbred lioi'3c best calculated to gut weight'
carrying hacka wotf gained l>y "Hippocampus," the other entries being " Fcve" and "Hercules."
Cattle. Judges : Messrs "Wainwright, J. Hunt, and C. J. Storey. Stewards : Messrs. R. Reynolds, B. Ewen, and W. Selby junior. The show of Shorthorns was a very 21001* one, although the quality was excellent. In the class for all aged bulls there was only one entry, Mr E. B. Walker's "Admiral," and ho carried off a firnt prize. In the next class, for thrae-ye-ir-old*, there was also only one entry, Mr A. Ramsay's " Lord Stephenson," and a first prize wns again awarded. In class 3, for two-year-old bulls, there were no entries, and only ono in the class following-, for yearlings, a first prize being obtained by Mr H. J. Patons " Royal Darlington." In classes 6 and 6 there wero no entries. In cla^s 7 Mr E. B. Walker was the only exhibitor with two very nice three-year-old heifers, securing Ist and 2nd prizes respectively. In the remaining three classes there were no entries. In Hercfords only two clasvses were represented, the three exhibits being all the property of Mr R. Reynolds. For three-year-old bulls " Defence 2nd," the only entry, got Ist prize ; and in rlass IG, for cows in milk or in calf, two fiae animals obtained Ist and 2nd certificates respectively. In " Dairy Cows," the Rev. Mr Bull was the only exhibitor, and got a first prize. Mr E. B. Walker showed two fat cowh, and got first and second certificates. For the Champion Prize of £5, for the best bull, there were two competitors—Mr Walker's "Admiral" and Mr R. Reynolds' " Defence 2nd "—the prize being awarded to the latter on account of superior breeding. There wore no entries for the beat cow, and none for Devon Cattle. For Mr Fantham'n prize of a cup valued at £10 for the best bull got by " Lord Darlington 2nd," there wero three aspuanti— Mr H. J. Paton'n white bull calf " Royal D.irlintfton," Mr Rums.iv'h " Lord Stephenson," and Mr H. Reynolds' roan two-year-old "Dulc of Bedford." Nothing could be more gratifying to the breeder of y,ll three pxhibits (Mr Fantham) than the knowledge of the difficulty which the judgps experienced in coining to a decision. Ultimately, however, tho red ticket was affixed to Mr Ramsay's animal.
Sheep. Judges : Messrs McGregor ami McNieol. Stewards : Messrs T. and G. lliuiciman. The exhibits in this section were not numerous but it can be .said, without evafgrentionth.it the qtnlity was excellent. Mr For#us->on's Lmcoltis would carry away honors anywhere. In class I, " aged rams" there were four entries, three being- from Gorton, the remaining one bpinjr a ram, the property of Mr J. A. Douglas, imtl imported by him from Canterbury, in which Province he took first prize last year as a. ram hojruret. He is by no means the best of Mr Doiigfl.is s rams, and was, besides, not in the best condition for showing. Mr Fer<*u.«on\s exhibits in this class wee pictures of symmetry with splondid wool. The animals were also well brought out, and secured to their owner first and second prizes. The first prize sheep took Ist and champion prizes last year .13 a hoggett. In class 2, ram hoyr^etts, Mi* FerfrusMon was the only exhibitor, but there* could bo no po&sible doubt as to the quality and first and second prizes were unhesitatingly awarded. In cla^s three for ewes with lamb at foot there was only one exhibit, from Monavale, which the judges commended. In elites 4 •' ewr>s" Mr FevKUsson had three exhibits and Mr Walker two. The latter were exeeedin«;lj' fine animals witli good fivme.s and plenty of wool, but they were not equal to their opponents in the fineness of the staple or in beauty of form, without having" more size. Bot.h first and second prizes in this class fell to Mr Fergusson and it is worthy of note that the second prize animal headed the list in lip r class in Cambridge la^t year. In class 5, ewe lionets the positions of the two breeders were reversed, Mr Walker carrying away the honours, his exhibit posses-any a fiucr fleece with more comeliness of carcase than the exhibit of Mr Fer<rusMjn\s. In elnbs G, three ewes with lambs at foot, Mr E. B. "Walker had no competitors and took away flr-»t and seooirl piizes. In class 7, Mr Fergusson had two exhibits, Mr Walker one, and Mr .S. T. Kuddon one. The last-named were oat of condition, otherwise th<\y were very nice slicep. 'fhe firat and second prize-:; again fell to Mr Ferguson, tlie first pen also taking the champion piize. In L'jioootera and Lougwool.T tlieie were no entries. In class 2J, shorn Lit wethers, four |>e-n M r ere shown, two by Mr Walker, one by Mr H. Ucyuolds, and one by Mr Fergiis^on. All the sheep were iv sph-ndid condition, and bore evidence of liberal fee'diny. Mr Walker took first place with Mr Fergusfton second. Tlie champion prizes for t!uj best i,im and the best pen of ewes fell to Mr Fergussou. Tlie only exhibit in extra stock m.is a fine little lamb exhibited by the Mat. ten* l^intliani and commended by the judges.
Pigs. Judges : Mr A. A. Fantham ami Captain Rtuiciman. AVliile tho entries in this section weie not numerous, the (jn.ihty was much above tin; average. In class ) there were some voiiUy line pigs, "D-rry," is'i'jwn by Messrs Cirpimter and Byron, and which obtained the iirst pri^e, being one of the best in the colony. He i* a purebred Bei-ksliiic ; his biro was. " Bulwark," by ".Saddler" (Ist pmotaker at the Royal Agricultural and other bhowb), out of "Favorite II.," daughter of " Favorite " (Ist prize taker at Kittersca). His <lam was "Queen," sire by "Ql.l Champion,'' out of daughter of " Daisy," out of "Polly." He wus bred by .Sir Nicholas Throckmoi ton at Tlirorkmorhm Park, Berkshire, and was imported to New Zealand, by Mr L. live. At, a rr-rent s;ile in England 72 pigh of tho Throekmorton herd, old and youn«r, redlispd £'),]') loa. After the show "Deny," was sold at- a high figure toMrB. Garland of Hautapu. The second prize was taken by Mr R. Kirkwood with a very shapely little animal though greatly inferior in size to the first. Mr John Douglas and Mr McOann also exhibited. In Berkshire sows Mr Kirkwood took fi-st and second prizes, while Mr Garlands exhibit was commended. In sows, small breed, Mr Garland took the first prize. In tho other classes, there were no entries.
Dairy Produce. Judges : Messrs. Koberrson and Major. The show of dairy produce was poor in the extreme. Mr A. Wallace exhibited some bacon and ham of excellent quality, and got first prize. There Avere two exhibits of cheese, but the judges would not make any award. In fresh butter there was only one really good exhibit that secured the first prize. Mrs Raynes' prize was won by Mrs W. Reynolds.
Poultry. Judges : Messrs Ohitfcy and Wren. There was really very little in this class which calls for comment. In the absence of anything like competition, it is almost itnpossiblo to know when to award or withhold praise, and this was felt to be the case all through the Show, but more particularly in special classes like the one now under notice. Mr R. 11. D. PerKusson was the only exhibitor in dorkin<rs, and he had only one exhibit taking a first prize. In Biahra.is, Mr D. Hassafj took the firotpri/o, and MrKtewart.second, Mr IfrituuU a.lao took u ttvst pruo foy
Creve Canir. In thin section Mr Hassall exhibited a bur-framed beehive, which was highly commended.
Dogs. Judges : Messrs Chitfcy and "Wren, Thoro was a fair number of dogs shown, and the quality all round was by no means b.id. Mr Kiricwood exhibited a very nice pointer dog, and took a first. Mr~F. C. Ewen got a hecond for a fine looking Irish Better. Major Hay exhibited a retriever, aud Mr Allom a water spaniel of good quality. la the Greyhound classes Mr E. B. "Walker and Mr Allwill carried away tho prizes. In cattle dog 3, Mr E. B. Walker also took a first prize. Major Hay showed to me very five cross-bred Hwstiffj, which took prizes, and Mr Burnett a couple of smooth-haired terriers, which were commended.
Sheep Dogs. Judges : Messrs C. J. Storey and J. MacI lean. Only two entered for the trial, which took place in Queen-street East. They I were Mr Tyson's hairy collie "Don," and [ Mr Bi-ocklesby's black and white collie. The pen was placed in the middle of the road just behind the Show paddock, but both failed to yard the sheep, and the judges declined to make any award.
ImplementsJudges: Messrs H. Reynolds and Waters. The show of implements was small but choice. In class 1, double-furrow ploughs, there were four exhibitors. The lirst piize was a warded r.o a plough in;mnf^ctured by Messrs Wallace and Hotham Implement Mnrmfaoturers of Ofcahuhu, shown by Mr Hubert Fisher of Pukciimu. This plough combim-a all the latest improvements introduced by Messis Wallace and Ilotham. The chief diftereuce between it and the well-known overhand lever ploughs of the same firm, which have been in use for many yeans in the Piovinue, o'-'nsishs in ;i sine lever, with iscntr.il lifting motion fur regulating- the depth of plo lyhmir and mincing- fhe wuav anil tear caused by friction of the different lever parts. It has also split sheaths, which not only give additional strength to the beam and to the sheath itself, but atfords facilities for removal not found in other ploughs in which the sheath is usually welded to the beam. The plough can thus be used as a double or a single furrow at pleasure, and as a single lias given general satisfaction. The second prize was awarded to Messrs. Wallace and Hotham for a plough similar to the first prize, except that the sheaths arc welded on instead of being bolted to the beams, the firm not wishing to show airainst Mr Fisher with the same implement. They also exhibited one of their favorite oyeihand lever plough, with all th'. 1 latent impro\ cnonts. Mr Dim wood io, of OnenntigM, also exhibited a very useful plough, >md tfot a commended ticket. It has much to recommend it, arid the workmanship -km*, in all inspects good and substantial. In cliss 2, single-funow ploughs, there were six entries, the first prize falling to Mr Dunwordie, for an anti-friction plough, and the second to Mi't-srs H. Wallace and Hotham. Mr Dunwoodie's single-furrow not being noticed. It, indfed, seemed scarcely fair to put an ordinary single-furrow again- 1 an anti-friction plough. Mr Morshead obt lined a fii^t pi ize in this class for a tuni-wre^t plough. Mi- Thomas flemmill, of Cambridge, exhibited a wellmade set of chain hairows, for which he secured a first prize. In class 4, Messrs Wallace and Hotham took the first prize for a set of three-horse h'trrows, on the key principle, by which the nuts arc done away with, the tiii"S beiug keyed on to the frame work. They are thus not at all liable to get out of order. Mr Fretwell, of Cambridge to>k second prize for a 3nt, on tho old principle, but displaying very good workmanship. In Class 9, Mr K. B. Walker took first prize, for his "champion," manure and seed drill inidc by Messrs. Johnson (lere and Trueman U.S. Mr Ferguson also exhibited some very useful machines in this class and carried off .second pi i/e and the commended ticket. In class 23, labor saving implements, thera were six entries, Mr E. Hall showed a 3-fnrrow plough made by Me-^r-, Wallace and Horbam on the sivno principle a* the double furrow exhibited by Mr Fisher. Mr Frotwpll c:nt ,\ second pri/,e for a spt of duckfoot harrows. R iyue^ gofc a fiisfc pri/c for the m.-uliitio for mo it, imported by Mr G-enr^e Itaynos, and dc^rribed in theso columns in a provioti'? Kstto.
Harneas and Saddlery. Mr I-rno B.ittvs of C unbridle ovhibilWi a splendid collection of harness and sid'llovy of nil kin<l», priiir-ip illy hi> own m ikr» and of exfollcnt as ovkm.in^hip. Thejudj,n> very ju.stly a wauled him n firs t prize.
Jumping Match. The jumping match came off about 3 odock in tlio centre of thy ground. The follow i»g wore tho entries : — Mr R. H. D. ! Forgns.-.ou'f Waterloo (0. F. Pilling) ; Mr ('. Yernnn's Highflyer (owner); Mr J. MoNi col's Laverock (owner) ; Mr Allwill's Fuljret (Y. (4ol(lwiiitli) ; Mr J. 8. Buckland's (it'iicr.il (F. (xoMsniith) ; Mr J. S. These three cleared the hurdle at 4ft. Gin., Mhen it was determined tt> award the pn/i's for style, Mr McNicol coming first, Mr Pilhng second, and Mr Allwill third. The Lunch. The usual dinner did not take place this year, but the t Committee, tho jiidfje*, steward"?, &c.,sat clown to an excellent cold tollati-n prepared by Host Raynes of tho National Hotel, and served, in the .Lecture room of the Club at 1 o'clock. V-Co'but 60 gentlemen sat down, the r;hair tteing taken by the President of the Club, Mr Every McLean and the Vice-chair by Capt. Runciovin one of the Vice-presi-dents. After full justice had been done to the luncheon. The usnal loyal and patriotic toasts were proposed and duly honored. The Chairman then proposed "the judges." He reminded them of the trouble which was always experienced in getting judges, and remarked ou the kindness of the gentlemen who had come forward that day to perform the very onerous and unpleasant duty. He spoke highly of the quality of the judging in the Auckland Province and so lon-r as tho judges continued to act honestly they need not fear critici.-m. The toast was heartily drank. Mr A, M. Waiuwright responded, and thanked them for the compliment. He had been a judge for them for three years, and although the exhibits had sadly fallen oil" in quantity, the quality remained very good. He did not pretend to give any idea why tho Show had fallen off ; it might be tho weather, or any other cause. He hoped, however, that it would revive. He was sure that there was a great future befoie the Waikato ; it would eventually be peconcl to no oth^r district in the colony. By careful management and the dismissal of all party feeling, they ought to make the Waikato Show the equal of any. They must, however, combine together and work hand in hand. (Applause.) Mr McGregor responded. He was astonished to see such a poor show. He was pleased with the sheep, which, in quality, would equal any in the colony. Mr McKinnon responded. He was porry to find Mr Maclean's fine draughts absent. He did not think they could be beaten auy where. Judging had been a comparatively easy task, because they hsd nothing before them. He could have wished that the judgment had been put to a sbveier tct. (Applause). Mr. Robertson, also responded. He was f>onvy he could not praise anything as the other speakers had done. He was very much disappointed, There was evidently a screw loose somewhere, he had been saevcr.il times a judge at Mahuraugi, u district wlmh they all knew could not be compared with Waikato ; yet at the Shows there the judges of dairy produce had something to do. He was surprised at the paltry chow of butter he had seen that day ; it was not fit for the market, with the exception perhaps of the prize butter. Why it actually shed tears (Laughter). It was too new, and people made a great mi.-take in showing new butter. He would remind them that the dairy was an important branch of farming. Many men in this country had ri&en through it. He commented in strong terms ou the poof quality of the rest of the dairy produce, and un the apparent apatly with which farmers regarded dairying in general in Waikato. Mr. F. Hicks roho to propose "the successful competitors." He commented on the superior quality of the sheep, bnt said the show of cattle was painful. He was borry that the principal stud breeders of the district had not shown. He had heard of three reasons why they would not show. The first was the "Pleuro" — well they all knew that to be a thing of the past. The second was that they did not think it fair to compete against people who had bought bulls or ran« 3 from them, and the third \yas that they did not like to show valuable animals if there was a chance of their being beaten (The Chairman :—": — " Mo iio"). He was only stating what he had hoard. His opinion was that the fa'mer should come to the Show ground to select and io learn and he ceuld do that beat by seeing the various herds in juxtaposition. He thought breeders themselves might derive some benefit from witnessing competition. (Hear hear ) The toast was duly honored. Mr E. H. D. Fergusson briefly responded and counselled unity of action, he pro- " posed the health of "The unsuccessful Competitors." Mr S. T. Seddon responded. Regarding the Show, it bad been suggested that Pleuro had something to do with marring its success. He would ask if Pleuro drove away the horses (Laughter.) He did not think they would ever succeed until they buried all local jea, ousies and pulled together in amity (Hear hear.) The Chairman said he could not allow the strictnres which some gentlemen had indulged in to pass without some comment." He bad been an exhibitor for over 20 years, and had never failed to get a prize ; that did not look as if he was afraid ; Since that time their stockbreeding had been merged into a big firm, and it had been considered by them that' it was not right to exhibit. They had a herd of 500 shorthorn cows .and 100 bulls and if they could not get prizes out of that number they ought to. Was it fair then, to compete against those who had only a few head? Then, again, was ifc ru'ht to select from a large number of horses to contest with a man who hid only one or two? They (lid not even intend to send cattle to Auckland ; but if a colonia.l show «reie held at Wellington they would exhibit. He wished to assure them that his firm could not possibly gam any credit by taking prizes. The toast of "The Press " was proposed by Mv Fautharo and responded to by Mr
S. E. G. Smith (Waikato Times) ; the toast of " The Band " by Mr Hicks ; and " The Ladies " by Mr Thornton Walker, after which the company bvoke up.
