One Hundred Men Drowned in the River Ebro. New York, September 3.
The Hr raid's Madrid correspondent telegraphed the particulars) of the frightful cntastiopho at Lwouo, a heantiful town built on the rijrht bank of the Ebro, where the rivrr is deep, «»nd opposite a. bunk pictnresquo with vineyards and mountains, with Navarre rising 1 in the distance. A regiment of the line was crossing 1 on a pontoon-bridge, the bandL playing 1 <raily, Avhen an awful crash was heard. The bridge gave way, carrying 1 into the river more than 100 men and officers. The scene that followed was of indescribable horror. The panic-stricken soldiers on phore were unable to assist their drowning comrades, who were clinging- to the debris of tho bridge. Many of the wives of the soldiers rushed to the river bank, but were unable to render assistance. Thousands of the inhabitants turned out, ;md the scene "was beyond description.
