BOARD OF TRADE RETURNS.
A return has been issued by t tbe Board of Trade, giving a list of British ships wholly or partially laden with grain or other seeds which have been reported to tbe Board as Laving foundered or been missing between tbe Ist of January 1873, and the 16th of May, 1880. The results are oummorized in yorioua tables at the end of the return. In these seven yews and a third 274 Bbips with grain cargoes (including both steamships and sailing vessels), of ft total tonage of 147,452 were reported as foundered or missing, and 2,799 lives were lost in them. The loss was much greater in sailing vessels than in steamships, only 50 of the latter, costing 778 lives, being lost, while as many as 224 of the former, costing 2,021 lives, either foundered or were missingw With regard to ships lost between the lit of January, 1875, and the 16th of May, 1880, the return has ascertained as far as possible the way in which the grain was stowed. In this spaoe of rather over fire years, out of a total of 190 sh/ps lost 46 had their grain stowed wholly in bulk, 28 had their grain stowed wholly in bags ; in 41 cases both methods of oarrvingwere used ; and in regard to the remaining 76 oases there is no information. It is added In a note that this attempt to' distinguish ships carrying flrain in balk from grain in bass, or to distinguish grain ships from other ihips, must be acoepted only for what it is worth— for instance, a ship carrying, grain as only a part of » cargo, even when that part is a small part, may, If she carries ifc in bulk, be classed as a ahip oarrywg a cargo of ,guiii in bulk,
