WAIKATO CAVALRY. Second Carbine Competition.

The second of three matches to be fired by teams representing the Te Awamutu, Cambridge, and Hamilton Troops came off on the Cambridge range on Friday last, and resulted in reducing the majority of Te Awamutu over Cambridge to one, and in leaving 1 the Hamilton Troop somewhat in the rear. The day gave promise of being well adapted to firing, and the different teams looked forward to a pleasant contest. However, about midday rain began to descend and continued with more or le?s violence throughout the match. At times, indeed, so thick was the " white electric rain " that the oontestants could scarcely distinguish the target, and the only consolation which could be derived was that everybody fared alike. Considering this, the firing was extremely good. The highest scoring was made by Te Awamutu, Lieutenant Bruce and Corporal Macfarlane each making 43. Of the Cambridge men, three made 41, one 39, and one 37. Hamilton did not come to the front at all, the only fair score being that of Sub-Lieutenant Hunt, who made 39. Sergeant Mackintosh, who fired for Cambridge at the Te Awamutu competition, was unable to fire, and his place was filled by Sub-Lieutenant Kirkwood. The marking was very efficiently carried out under the direction of Sergeant-Major Carley, who is deserviog of much praise for the painstaking and very satisfactory manner in which the duties of marker were performed. Satisfactory refreshments were provided. Major Jackson, Captain Runciman, Captain Rutherford, and. Lieutenant Fisher were on the ground, and rendered [ assistance in scoring, &c. The arrangements were most satisfactory in every respect. The following are the scores made on Friday :

The concluding match will be played m Hamilton.
