[Memorandum.] Survey Office, Auckland, September 9th, 1880.
To J. P. Campbell, Esq., Chairman Cambridge Town Board, Cambridge. In reply to your letter of the Bth inst., whilst fully acknowledging the necessity that exists for a standing survey of Cambridge and numerous other towns in this district, I much regret that at present I am unable to comply with your request. I have, as, you say, on several occasions stated that this work should be done, but I have always added that it would be when one of the Government staff was at liberty. I am sorry that I cannot even say when this is likely to be. It should be understood that the character of the survey which will be made is not one which would define the individual boundaries, but rather to furnish a few points here and there, such as corners of one or more of the principal streets, from vwhich private surveyors could start. But the real object of the survey is to fix points irrespective of the old boundaries on which the land transfer surveys of the future may be laid. I regret that the limited staff of officers at my disposal precludes my complying with your request at once. (Signed) S. Watland, Chief Enginesr.
